THE 2 GREAT STARS OF "BABY JANE" ON 1 GREAT SHOW! 'Cleo' Returns Put at 815.7 Million Other Champ Grossers Told; I Cliff Richard British Favorite BY PHILIP K. SCHEUER Times Motion Picture Editor "The Birth of a Nation" is very probably the "all-time top film grosser" perhaps in excess of $50 million but nobody knows for sure.

Thus Variety, in its annual rundown on the box-office champs. Instead. "Gone With the Wind" is the listed No. 1, with an estimated intake of $41.2 million. Eleven oUters of the top dozen are credited with drawing more than $14 million as follows, in descending order: "Ben-Hur" ($38 million), "The Ten Commandments" "Around the World in 80 Days" "West Side Story" "The Robe" "How the West Was Won" "South Pacific" "Cleopatra" (to date, "The Longest Day" "The Bridge on the River Kwai" ($15) and "Lawrence of Arabia" "Cleopatra," Variety opines, is "not to be the disaster earlier feared" (a gentle way of saying it won't break As of 1963's end it had opened in only 55 theaters.

Its negative investment is quoted at $40 million and its break-even figure at $60 million. MGM's "full-vear loss, largely attributable to 'Mutiny on the' is given as "over $17 million." The picture's rentals have brought back $7.7 million, with $9.8 estimated as the figure "Mutiny" may climb to domestically. In Britain, a Different Story Of last year's releases, those in the big money, in addition to "Cleopatra," "How the West Was Won," "Lawrence" and "The Longest Day," are "Intra la Douce" (at $9.2 million, the second highest-grossing comedy on record), "The V.I.P.'s," "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Son of Flubber." In Merrie Old England, the story is quite different. Under "Britain's Best for 1963," Motion Picture Herald reports the most profitable cinemas were "From Russia With Love," "Summer Holiday," "Tom Jones" and "The Great Escape" all home products except the last, and even that had a predominantly British cast. The year's most popular star for the second year running was Cliff Richard.

And who is Cliff Richard? A fairly apropos description-would be "the Elvis Presley of England." He was in "Summer Holiday," above. Omitted at present from the British survey were such hard-ticket attractions as "Cleopatra," "How the West Was Won" and "Lawrence of Arabia." Following Cliff Richard, the performing favorites were Peter Sellers, Presley, Sean Connery, Hayley. Mills, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Albert Finney, Dirk Bogarde and Norman Wisdom. They say they will make feature films, too. TRIBUTE: In Portofino, Italy, Rex Harrison somehow has taken to musing about the difference between 'American and European "I cannot be expansive Enough in a tribute to" Hollywood he Vrites expansively.

"The important difference between '(them) and those we find in Europe is the creative 'spirit in Hollywood, whereby every member of the 'production unit takes a personal and ambitious interest in-every picture on which he or she works. This results 3n fast, more co-operative and certainly more intelligent "concepts than do occur with foreign crews. I "The European attitude is that each film is just another job. "Now, why is this? I think I have found one important reason. It's a matter of economics.

Americans live on a standard. They drive cars, live in better homes, demand more comforts and conveniences. They dine and dress better. Thus they work harder and more conscientiously in order to keep their personal standards at this high level. "They are paid better, but this does not result, as one might imagine, in higher production costs.

Conversely, this results in lower production costs because their work is more proficient and they are not prone to make mistakes." Harrison advocates a crew exchange program. "We both," he adds, "have much to learn from one another." THE RAFTERS RING WITH LAUGHTER! THE FUNNIEST, FASTEST, MOST FANTASTIC AND FANCIFUL SLAPSTICK COMEDY THAT HAS BEEN ON THE SCREEN!" CALIC MUSIC CO, 637 So. Hill St. and ALL MUTUAL TICKET AGENCIES FOR THEATRE PARTIES AND SPECIAL SHOWINGS CALL HO (-024S BY MARGARET HARFORD Times Staff Wrlter "Children of the Damned, an MGM feature, suffers from the "sequel syndrome which means it isn't nearly so good as its 1960 predeces sor, "Village of the Damned. It could have been but pre tentiousncss set in. "Village of the Damned, you remember, was the science-fiction sleeper that introduced those weird, par thenogenetic children with ray-gun eyes.

What really surprised everyone, though was a neat hour-and-a-half's worth of creepy fantasy. The follow-up, also from MGM via England, lacks the originality of that earlier film. Now in a city wide run. the new picture is also heavy-laden with the kind of messages a Hollywood producer once said were bet ter left to estern Union Granted, Ave can alwavs use a reminder that the next hand to press a trigger may blow up the world. But there's nothing in this pic ture to dispel the Hollywood producer's notion about the efficacy of the telegraph.

Start and Stop Things get off to a prom ising start when a small boy jolts a team of British re search scientists by rolling up the highest I.Q. ever re corded. What more there are four or five others like him scattered around the world and that's enough to unnerve anybody. End of promising start. The last time we ran into these little monsters they turned out to be invaders from outer space bent on taking over the earth.

That held a lot of four-square shock value at the time but it was simplicity itself compared to more recent developments. Now they are juvenile Einsteins (forerunners of Future Man) on a Messianic mission to teach the earth's foolish occupants a lesson about starting wars, if it kills them. Kills everybody, that is. These strange kids, led by a stoic fellow named Give Powell, have deadly eyes and destructive dispositions.
