(.T--If Leonard Olson, Charter Oak garageman, didn't have an, eye for figures, Winston Walker 'and John Segcr probably wouldn't be in jail at council Bluffs., held as suspects in more than 30 mail robberies. Crawford county Sheriff A. C. Greene captured the two men Saturday, after running them down in a wild highway chase. The story of their capture, however, goes bock a year and disclosed the methods by which postal inspectors have brought the criminal world to agree that "it's a risky business to monkey with the mails." The inspectors, tipped through a confessiion that Walker and Seger were suspects in mail robberies. Notes License Number. The postmasters were instructed to turn the circulars over to service station proprietors and garagemen. Three months ago the Charter Oak postmaster turned one over to Olson. "Kind of be on the lookout for those two fellows, Len," he said. Olson read the circular, noted ths license number believed to be on the fugitive's automobile. "And then I forgot all about it," Olson said Thursday, "until I looked up from my work Saturday and saw a car bearing that license number pull into town." Hurries to Mayor. Olson hurried to Mayor Herbert Anstein. Together' they hurried to Denison for Sheriff Greene. On the way back they met Walker and Seger. In their car the sheriff found burglary tools and guns. Postal Inspector John Streich reported Olson's eye for figures and he may be rewarded since the government offered a reward for the arrest and conviction of Walker and Seger. "These two," Streich said, "are believed to be members of a gang which has stolen more than $9.000 in bonds and cash from the mails, including the looting of a mail pouch at Rockwell City and the holdup of a railroad station agent at LeMars." 2 lowans Gave to Fund of Crusaders WASHINGTON, UP)--The lobby committee disclosed that two lowans contributed to the fund of the Crusaders, a national organization. Explaining the patronage situation, the state chairman said that every republican candidate for state office had pledged to him, with one exception, that jobs -would be handed out only after the applici.at had been approved by his own county central committee. Mr. Cook said that each of the larger counties should have one or two men and women work with the chairman, expenses would be paid from state headquarters, with the understanding that if the party won then they would be taken care of. The county reports indicated that in all except Chickasaw, Howard and Winneshiek would turn in republican majorities if the election was held now.
