As a parent interested in such selections as a guide to family viewing, I was wondering when these listings would begin. NAME WITHHELD, North Hollywood. They will begin with a column entitled "Programs of Special Interest' in next Sunday's TV Times.

Also, such programs will be listed under that title in the daily Times when they occur. If producers and directors occasionally make a bum guess on one of their productions, is it not equally plausible that the writers whose business it is to report on these shows in the press can be way off base occasionally? This, it seems to our household, was the case When (you) called David Wolper's documentary, "Hollywood: The Great Stars," cheap and tawdry. Our family considered it one of the best we have enjoyed in a long time. OLAF KLAUSEN, Woodland Hills. Yes, we can be icay off base, but this show seemed to me a very shoddy piece of work in comparison with Wolper's earlier Hollywood studies.

A prime example was the Monday night repeat on Channel 5's excellent Special of the Week of Wolper's "Hollywood: The Golden Years narrated by Gene Kelly, which will be re-shown Thursday night at 8. Your column about "Bonanza" buying the script from is both misleading to non-writing readers and frustrating to non-selling writers.

Agents do not read unsolicited scripts by unknowns; your column gives the impression they do. Also, you fail to mention that "Granny" had sold two previous scripts to "The Loretta Young Show" and "The Steel Hour" and any writer knows that mention of a previous credit on a top show is 100 of the battle No mention is made, however, how the 46-year-old wife of an insurance agent made the previous sales. I'll bet my bottom typewriter-ribbon that this "piddly" letter can't be printed without an agent or without knowing your publisher. HAROLD SCHULTZ, Los Angeles. You lose your bet.

Lois Hire sold her first script after a friend took it to the producer of "The Loretta Young Show." Her second sale to "The Steel Hour" was accomplished when she mailed her unsolicited manuscript to the program. She made no mention of either of these credits when she submitted her "Bonanza script, "Any Friend of Charlie's which occupied the hour last Sunday. At least, producer David Dortort said the was completely unknown to him. The real reason Mrs. Hire's script was bought was apparently on the screen if was a delightful play, fresh, original and, at times, hilarious.

Mrs. Hire has an extraordinary talent (even her heavies were not routine) and I hope she does more than "piddly" writing.
