KANAWHA--First of its kind in the mid\vest, a new chemical seed dusting machine is being installed in the seed and-service building of' fhe Northern Iowa experiment association station at Kanawha, .This machine, which will be ready by March 10, will be used to .treat seed grains to farmers around Kanawha and at the same time to demonstrate the practicability of such machines to grain dealers and seed companies. Iowa State college specialists, who encouraged the purchase of the machine by the association, describe the seed treating machine as "foolproof." The seed dusting apparatus features an automatic weighing device designed lo mix dust and seed in proper, unvarying proportions. Baffle boards in the chute through which the grain and chemical dust fall complete the mixing process. Being Installed. A new commercial seed cleaning machine is being installed along with the seed treatment machine. The two can be operated together so that cleaned seed flows into the treating hopper. C. Eldredge of the Iowa agricultural experiment station at Ames. · The new- hybrid is outyielding Japanese Hulless by 15 to 20 pet- cent in the experimental plots and is out-popping it by 20 to 25 per cent. Starting in 1928 with 50 selected ears of Japanese Hulless, Prof. Eldredge, after intensive popping and eating and yielding tests, developed 40 promising inbred lines. lojap is the combination of the best 3 of these 40 lines--a three-way cross. About 40 pounds of the new seed are to be distributed in packets sufficient to plant 100 or more hills. A similar quantity of Japanese Hulless will be included in each packet for purposes of comparison. Those interested in trying out lojap, should address their requests to Joe L.
