MARCH 12 ·§ 1931 CRESS DECLARES NEED FOR STATE POLICE IS SHOWN AldenJRobbery Pointed Out as Example; Value of Law Group Urged. The only way to control organized crime in Iowa is by the organization Sv, a ,^ st ^ te P° lice force, declared Sheriff Q. E, Cress in commenting upon the escape of the Alden bank robbers Tuesday. ^^ _ "By,a state police I do not mean highway patrol," Mr. Cress said. "A state police organization goes alone ·way in combatting crime. A highway patrol is only a step in that direction." - . Last-year Iowa had 25 bank robberies which caused a loss of more than .5100,000 and Minnesota had about the same record, Sheriff Cress pointed out. Illinois had 68 robbef- ies and Nebraska lost over $1,000000 In securities asd cash and 38 robberies in Oklahoma caused a loss of $100,000, he said;. Lists Other Examples. On the other hand Michigan had five bank robberies and the bandits who were not killed were sent to the penitentiary, Sheriff Cress pointed out and added that Massachusetts has not had a daylight holdup in five years. Michigan and Massachusetts have sta,te police organizations. "That is why Iowa should have a state police force trained in their duty and experienced in the apprehension of criminals," Sheriff Cress said. The ideal plan suggested by Sheriff Cress provided for the equipment of all police cars with radios controlled from a central station. When anything happened the cars could close in toward the center of activity rather than all coming to a .central point and working out! Sheriff Not Equipped. The average sheriff Is not equipped to combat the modern bandit, Sheriff Cress declared. /The state is building hundreds of miles of pavement which make bandit escape easy, Sheriff Cress commented and added that most of the robberies are committed by non residents of the' state. A driver's licence law with a $1 apiece fee would provide for the police organization with no additional levy for tax, Sheriff Cress said. Bank bandits will continue in the state and Iowa will continue to have . 25 to 40 bank holdups a year until it can be shown the cost is too high and the risk too great to attempt," Sheriff Cress declared. Bureau Does Work. ..-' "Much good work has been done by the bureau of investigation dur- _JjJg the past 18 months but it -, occurs 'tiian 'to Hp^pVehymllthe-crim- 'irial afterwat-d," he said. The. Iowa State Sheriffs' association has indorsed the state police force, he said. No opposition to a state police force should be felt from organized labor and labor in-New York state has indorsed the system, he said and added the law might state that the police could not be used to break strikes. a^4*^s£^22iii£i^F.^y_£,7^i^ 1 . » ' ' ' ' - ' . "Don't eat sweets." . A youth asked plaintively: "How about tea?" and Gandhi replied with a broad smile, "you may drink tea. Drink it from the river Sabarmati," the Sabarmati is the holy river of Gujerat.
