Above is Iva Johnston, finisher at the plant, using a steam press. The steam emerges through tiny holes in the bottom of the iron and keeps the iron itself literally dancing above the fabric. The material is set rather than pressed by s t e a m and care is taken throughout tne process lo Ucfp the measurements of the garment correct. Below is an exterior view of the I'halen plant and two trucks--with Tim in the doorway. (Lock photos; Kayenay engravings) widely known cleaning establishments in the city. Few are the persons who have resided here any length of time who have not seen the green and white plant at 111 Madison avenue southwest, with its windmill in the garden to the .north of it where Highway 18 crosses Willow creek, on First street southwest. For tie past nine years these men have been in business in their own building at this site, with Tim contacting the outside business and Tom managing tne work within the plant itself. The Phalen brothers have been in the cleaning business for the past 16 years, however, starting at 109 South Federal avenue as the North Iowa Cleaning company at the close of the World war. The company now employs six persons, keeps two trucks in constant service; and occupies 2,400 square feet of floor space and storage room in its one story structure. Many Services Offered. All phases of dry cleaning service are offered by the Phalens, including the cleaning of garments, both woolens and silks, fur coats and pelts, gloves, hats, upholstered furniture, rugs, house furnishings, hangings, tapestries, draperies, velvets and velours, as well as the moth proofing and storage of coats, and the cleaning and blocking of knitted garments, woolens and boucles. Alterations, relining and repair work on garments is also a part of the service of the company. -Although the company limits its trade territory to Mason City itself, the two trucks of the firm are busy from morning until night transporting a volume of business that is largely the result of personal contact of these two brothers with Mason Cityans for many years past. The most important part of the cleaning business is the concentrat- from two to three days. "Your Story in Pictures Leaves Nothing Untold" KAYENAY ENGRAVING CO. and S. W. LOCK, PHOTOGRAPHERS Globe-Gazette Bldg. Phone 828 . . IS BETTER BREAD ers at the Phalen plant strive to keep the solvent perfect. The same process of purifying the fluid is used as in refining the solvent originally from the crude material, which is first cracked with heat, then alkali and is then filtered through carbon to give the-Water White solvent used as cleaning fluid. This solvent is used exclusively in commercial cleaning today. Cleaned to Measure. Cleaned to measure" is a phrase used by the Phalen cleaners that means exactly what it says. The utmost care for detailed measurement is used on women's garments cleaned at the Phalen plant. Each garment is measured with tailor- like thoroughness when it is received at the plant. These measurements are recorded, and followed closely through the finishing process so that when the garment is delivered it is the same size in every .respect as when received. Although wardrobes are not as extensive as in former years, due largely to the depression, the quality of fabrics today is much more durable than in 'years past. This also requires different treatment in cleaning. Among the more practical and durable fabrics that have become so popular in the past few years, have also appeared cheap fabrics, however, which are really products of new plant fibers rather than of wool or silk. The cleaning of such fabrics of course requires even more care than the standard fabrics. Among the chief concerns of the present day cleaners, however, is the demand of the public for speeded up production. This has resulted in the rearranging of machines and the grouping of departments so there is no lost motion in the process. It is now possible to turn out in one day an amount of cleaning business that would in other years have required SHEET METAL WORK Needs Repair After the Winter's Snow and Ice.
