MASON CITY GLOBE-GAZETTE, MARCH 26 M 1930 SEVEN FARMER-LABOR STRIFE IS NOTED Minnesota Supreme Party to Open State Convention Friday in St. Paul. ST. PAUL, W)--Internal strife and dissention beleaguered the farmer-labor party on the eve of its important state convention Friday. Once a happy and supreme family in Minnesota's political domicile, the party still is supreme but found the solid front with which it faced the opposition in the last three general elections, threatened with discord over the platform and in- drosement of candidates. Rumblings of communism too has stirred unrest, inspiring United States Senator Elmer Benson, here for the assembly, to urge his colleagues to avoid "red baiting." Some members of the party have assailed affiliation of truck drivers' union No. 574 of Minneapolis with the faction. Fight for Nominees. The fight for nominees still claimed the major interest as delegates converged on St. Paul for the two day gathering, which will determine the party's aims for the Doming months. Benson, himselt an aspirant for the governor's chair, has urged harmony and pleaded that the party be placed above personal ambitions. Gov. Floyd B. Olson, the only man apparently certain of indorse- ment for the office of his choice, is counted on heavily by party chieftains to reconcile differences between contending factions. The governor will be indorsed for United States Senator but there the unanimity ends. A struggle was in prospect over the gubernatorial post with three candidates determined to seek that office. While Senator Benson has been indorsed by 19 of the county conventions, Lieut. Gov. Hjalmar Petersen and former Senator Magnus Johnson are not without their supporters. Claim Sufficient Power. There is some sentiment to have the convention waive indorsement and permit the candidates to fight it out in the primaries for the nomination. Benson adherents claim, however, hey will muster sufficient power to win the convention in- dorsement for their man. Only two counties have embraced the Petersen banner while 41 other delegations will come to the convention uninstructed. Delegates also apparently headed for difficulty in the framing of their platform. Two years ago, the party advocated a co-operative comnion- weath calling for widespread public ownership. Some Disaapproval Voiced. The attitude then was that the national administration at that time pointed to the left and with that as an example, the party was justified in mainining its liberal claims by going a few steps further to the left. Disapproval was voiced in some quarters later, however, and this year there has been a growing sentiment to couch the platform in more Succeeds Hagood Slaj. Gen. Powerful liberals, however, still have loud voices in the party affairs and unless the more conservatives and the liberals can be brought together a prolonged dispute was in prospect. Olson Is Keynoter. Governor Olson will deliver the keynote address at 11 a. m., Friday. Among candidates for party in- dorsement are: Lieutenant governor, G. T. Lindsten, Erling Swenson and Howard Y. Williams; secretary of state, Dr. Paul Hartig, Minneapolis; J. H. Nordin, Columbia Heights; . state treasurer, Paul S. Rasmussen and possibly Herman Aufderheide. Harry H. Peterson, incumbent attorney general, is expeceed to win the indorsement for re-election. He has been represented as having abandoned earlier intentions to run for senator or governor. Not Seeking Indorsement. ST. PAUL, (.T)--John T. Lyons of LeCenter, who was defeated for state auditor two years ago by Stafford King by a 648 vote margin, Thursday announced he is not seeking indorsement for any state office by the state farmer-labor convention opening in St. Paul Friday. 10 SECOND KIND Those Joe Louis shorts are not popular with the other heavyweights.
