"Air conditioning? Humph! Just another of those newfangled gadgets aimed at my gullible fellow citizens." There you have the probable reaction of a large percentage of Mr. John Publics whom you might chance to interview on the subject. A maximum of five minutes spent in intelligent analysis of air conditioning and Mr. Public will he doing his best to swallow his words as quoted above. In the first place, Ray E. Pauley, admittedly a strong advocate of air conditioning, will tell you that neither air conditioning nor the principle behind it is a "new-fangled gad- jet" An illustration serving to bring this point home effectively is the Indian and his methods of air conditioning. They Tried It. Several centuries before Mason City began to spring up the Indian population in this vicinity was doing its level best to condition North Iowa air, but one cannot expect too much from an open fire in the center of a buffalo skin tepee on Christmas eve or a shady spot at noon on the Fourth, of July. A moment's reflection and one realizes that the Indian's back grew chilly when he faced his fire, and vice versa, and that in either the tent or the shade he frequently was exposed to drafts, dampness and dirty air. "Today there is no need to live ia a home which is no more comfortable than a tepee, and to be sensible at the risk of being thought gullible in the minds of the uninformed is certainly to be preferred to living uncomfortably in drafty, dirty air. Every home in the world has air conditioning in some form, though it be only a window or an open fire which serves as the conditioning factor. If the air inclosed within the walls of a home is to be made at all different from the outside atmosphere, why not temper it to the degree of warmth or coldness and the humidity which is most healthful to the individual and pleases him most? That is the principle of air conditioning -- the objective which it sets out to accomplish. Has Four Essentials. The four essentials of air conditioning and the four corresponding commodities supplying those essentials are available at the Ray E. Pauley company. They are: Proper home construction -Stran-Steel framing, made famous by the Stran-Steel house shown last year at the Century of Progress, guarantees an en during structure and correct infiltration of air. Adequate insulation -- Eagle Rock wool fire-proof insulation provides equal protection against heat or cold and can be installed in both old and new homes. Good heating facilities -- the Lennox Aire-Flo unit filters, washes, humidifies, warms and circulates pure fresh air throughout a home. Complementary cooling system -- Any standard refrigerating coil can be installed with a Lennox unit.
