"THIRST KNOWS NO SEASON" DRINK IN BOTTLES Horses and mules arc coming back into theiv own again as the heavy duty power on the Iowa farms if the increased interest and sales in this type'of. property may be taken at its face value. Each week at the E. A. Lund Sales. Stables, located near the city limits east of Mason Cily on Highway 18, a special day lias been set aside for horse sales, which have proved to bo practically equal in interest and volume to the cattle sales. Throughout the winter and spring months, activity is lively in the horse markets in the corn country. Farmers from a radius of 100 miles of Mason City are here cavly in the day when these sales are to bo held, every Wednesday during the present season, and more than 100 head o£ horses are being sold over the auction block each week. Acts as Clearing- House. It is an nil day a f f a i r with the average farmer, slock raiser or spectator when he visits the Lund Sales Stables--all day because 'he is enthused with the dramatic picture unfolded there. It is the livestock clearing house of the corn, country and the one place the farmer has a voice at setting the market price. Some of the horses arc brought to and taken away from the market in the farmers' own trucks. There nre pens and provisions for all types of stock. The quarters arc comfortable. There is a large sales ling, well kept, and elevated seats for customers at the sales. Agricultural men meet here; spend the day; eat their noon meal at the pavilion restaurant; find cigars, candy and refreshments of all kinds at their disposal. It is the stockman's winter exchange market and hundreds are taking the opportunity to clear their surplus stock through this means of marketing. Top Price Assured. Competitive bidding under this system assures the' producers o£ top prices for their stock. The auction market enables the producer to cope with expert buyers and packing house representatives. Lo- · cal buyers and farmers are given a chance in this wey to compete each week with the regular markets and the farmer and producer receives the full benefits of whatever competition may bring for his products. Auction market sales develop and train men whose sole business it is to keep constantly posted on market conditions and to do the best possible job of selling the producer's stock. With improved highways and trucks mailing possible quick short hauls to and from such markets, stockmen and farmers quickly realized the value of the auction market in dollars and cents. Not only is the Lund Sales Stables a vital horse market for this vicinity, but it also is a center o£ interest for those following livestock sales. Each, week 300 cattle, 1,000 hogs and ~2,000 sheep are sold at auction here. Cattle sales are always held on Thursday. Special sales are also held on other days of the week, most ot the specials dealing in thoroughbred stock; The barn is also available for individuals planning sales on other days than Thursday, the livestock auction day, and Wednesday, the horse.market day. A veterinarian appointed by the state has direct supervision over each sale and ,T. R. Dorsey anr) Ora Bayless are the auctioneers.
