FEBRUARY 19 1931 MASON CITY GLORE-GAZETTE 19 FRANK COURTNEY, "PLANE DOCTOR, 15 TESTS THEM Man Who Flew Over Western Front Can't Count His Crashes. By LORENA HICKOK NEW YORK, Feb. 19. (/B--Other pilots call Capt. Frank T. Courtney "the airplane doctor." For 17 years, counting out a period when he was flying over the western front, he has been te-ting airplanes--trying them out baforc they were turned over to armies, navies, or the public. He started with "pushers." The number of untried undividual ships he has flown runs into hundreds-he can't remember just how many. He can't remember, either, just how many times he has cracked up. Down In Flames. Three times he has come down in flames--once in the middle of the Atlantic ocean at midnight. Wings have crumpled, rudders have come off, propellers have broken, landing gear has collapsed. He was shot down six times in one week on the western front--his ship out of commission, or his observer wounded or killed. He was wounded Himself while trying to bring down an enemy kite balloon with hand grenades. And all his life Frank T. Courtney has been afraid in airplanes. "Just scared stiff," he said today. "Every time I take up a new ship I'll spend hours figuring out the terrible things that might happen. Sometimes I break out in a cold sweat. Is Always Afraid. "But to the fact that I always have been afraid I probably owe my life. There isn't a more cautions airplane pilot in the world than I am. As a result of all that worrying, when the thing I've been ex- EDISON KIN CHRISTENED This baby has the dictlnction of being the youngest grandchild of Thomas A. Edison, aged inventor. He. Once, while he was trying a new barrel roll, the longer wing o£ his bi-plane broke in two. He couldn't do a thing with the ship--just had to let it come down its own way. It descended in spirals and "hit right hard." But he was only scratched. "The first 700 feet I spent cussing myself," he said. "The last 300 feet I kept saying to myself, 'Will' I get away with it? Or won't I?" Matter of Seconds. Tougher than that, tho, was another time when a wing broke up. This time the ship vibrated so that we couldn't see a thing. He was only 320 feet off the ground when it happened. "It was only 'a matter of seconds, but it seemed like three years," he Grocery Specials FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND MONDAY BUTTER Best -···- ",- creamery; one pouna with order 27c 55c MACARONI, EGG NOODLES or «1 r SPAGHETTI, lOc size, 4 pkgs.^-DC / COFFEE 30e grade, per Ib. 20c; 3 Ibs. for .. · BUY NO. 10 SIZE FRUIT AND SAVE MONEY APRICOTS, BLACKBERRIES £t or LOGANBERRIES, solid packOt ITALIAN PRUNES or M t PEACHES, solid'pack *$" CHERRIES, high grade, g" red pitted O I RASPBERRIES, red or O' black, best grade O I WALNUTS Regular 35c grade; pound 29r CATSUP, 25c size PEACHES in Syrup, Jack Sprat, 35c size. He was in n hospital two months after that one. On his very next flight, the rudder came off, and he" landed with the motor in his lap. Captain Courtne recently left the Curtiss-Wright corporation, for which he had been testing airplanes, and is now on his own, as an aviation consultant.
