WHEN IT RAINS IT £^ POURS Remodeling 65-Year-Old Portland Hall PORTLAND -- The 'Community Hall at Portland began getting its face lifted this week after serving as a lodge and meeting place since 1887. About 25 workmen from three townships--Portland, Owen and Mason--started work that will include leveling of the floor and rebuilding the foundation, rcfinishing the floor, replacing cracked or broken windows and building new window screens. The entire inside will be painted and a kitchen complete with ; gas stove will be constructed. It is the intention of the building committee to put in running water and a new heating system as soon as funds are available. All money and work is being donated. When finished, the building will pro vide'a place for 4-H club activities,, religious services and other community gatherings. The structure is intended to be used for Farmers Union and Farm Bureau meetings. Decision to remodel the building was prompted because of increased difficulty in renting a place in Mason City plus lack jof a suitable . meeting place af, Portland. Partly financed by Modern Woodmen of America, the'structure was originally built in 1887 with partly donated help and has served as a lodge of that organization and a community, meeting place for 65 years. In 19.19 it was deeded to the Porl- land Community Church and services are still held although there is no-regular resident minister. Chairman of the building committee is Giles Frye of Portland with Mrs. Leo Oswald, Mason City, the secretary-treasurer. In charge of fund raising for the townships are Mrs. Glen McEachran, Portland; John Diercks, Mason; John Foster, Union. THIS AD GOOD FOR ON PURCHASE OF 12 OZ.
