MASON CITY GLOBE-GAZETTE FIVE It Seems to Me --Fkoto by Ikuaell John Holler is a member of a well know family, northeast of Nora Springs. Born on a farm in 1882 and living on a farm for 40 years, he may well claim to be a good judge of what farmers want In the seed line. He is a graduate of the old Nora Springs seminary and of Iowa State college. He is married, has three children and now lives in Nora Springs and devotes his entire time to the seed business. ^on-Metallic S h e a t h e d Cable. Per oot .. 6'/ 2 c Plane -- 9'/ z in. long. Ad- ustable... $1 By JOHN HOF1ER How did you start in the seed business ? I started by selling such seeds as seed corn, timothy, clover and seed grains produced on the farm. We liked the Silver King corn and it did well for us and we began to sell to our neighbors and others. My brother and father were somewhat connected with the business for a time but now I am alone. I took a natural liking for the seed business and I try to put out a quality product of high purity and germination. How long did you conduct the business from the farm 5- For four years after which a small warehouse was built in Nora Springs which we enlarged as the business grew. Our first building became too small in five years, so we sold it and built our present building and equipped it with modern seed cleaning machinery. Gradually the business grew until I began to handle seeds in car lots and to supply other dealers who are not equipped to reclean their seed. Our business is now about 75 per cent wholesale and I have sold to dealers as far west as Colorado and east to New York state. Our books show dealings in 15 states. Our retail trade is local and confined to a radius of 13 to 20 miles. Where do you get your supply of timothy, red clover, alsike, alfalfa, sweet clover? Mostly in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Northern grown seeds are best, but the supply changes from one locality to another according to the in (Turn to S) We Fay More for HIDES and WOOL Carl Stein Before You Sell BABY CHICKS We Hatch All Standard Breeds Custom Hatching PRICES REASONABLE BRITT HATCHERY BRITT.
