DRINK IN BOTTLES TO CLEAR STOCK--ALL HOT WATER HEATERS INSTALLED FREE PRICES REDUCED The E. B. Higley and company cold storage, 405 South Federal avenue, is the-outgrowth of a business that has seen many industrial changes in Mason City and is the answer for a need here for a large storage of this type for many kinds of products shipped both to and from the city. Approximately 130,000 c u b i c feet of storage space is kept constantly at low temperatures and products, including frozen meats, fish, serums, beer, fruits and many other products are kept here. The storage is used for the overflow of the local packing industries and tons of meat, butter and other products are stored here. Log Is Recorded. The storage itself consists of four floors reached by a heavy duty elevator and kept constantly at low- temperatures by an immense refrigeration system which is running 24 hours a day. Three shifts of engineers watch the machinery and check temperatures in each room every two hours. A complete log of the day is recorded every 24 hours. E. E. Higley established the original business here in 1880, at that time handling store butter, eggs and poultry in a wholesale manner. The territory proved good and farmers brought their produce to the Mason City market, so that Mr. Higley soon built up a thriving business. Then farmers gradually gave up churning butter and there was a scarcity of the so called "store butter." Creamery Established. Since farmers were anxious to bring cream to market instead of churned butter, Mr. Higley estab- "America's Favorite Drink" And, Ours Are Different Each coffee that goes into our blends is carefully selected, and Cup Tested. Higley and company which supplies some of the most critical ice cream and butter manufacturers in north Iowa and pays cash for the product. The station was opened recently as a service to farmers of this territory who have sold cream to the company in the past and have depended on the many years of experience in distributing the highest test cream for purposes which bring the most cash value. Tne latest equipment and methous of handling- cream are used to insure bullet 1 and ice cream manufacturers a high grade product. lished a creamery and bought cream from the farmers, the business running as high as 2,000,000 pounds a year. The egg and peullry business increased likewise and before long the company was receiving so much milk, as well as cream, that a wholesale and retail milk business, was also established. Buttermilk left over in the creamery business was dried and this product was shipped over the entire world for many years. It was at this time that the company also began selling 1 poultry feed to farmers. In 1925 the creamery and produce company was sold to the Swift company. Recently the company has limited itself to the operation of the cold storage, the purchasing of cream, both sweet and sour, the distribution of frozen fish, Murphy's feed for poultry and animals and the distribution of serum manufactured by the Grain Belt Serum company of Omaha. W. s. Wilcox is president and manager of the company. Storage Open lo Public. One of the most interesting phases oC the cold storage business is the opening of the service to the public. Individual lockers have been installed and are rented to persons who desire to purchase their meat in quantities and store it, or to sportsmen who desire to store game killed in season. The lockers are. built in units of eight lockers to a unit, and each locker is accessible at al! times. Many cuts of meat frozen for future use will be found stored there by farmers and even institutions such as the I. p. O. F. home, where meat is supplied by stock raised on the farm. Barrels of beef bones and sides of bellies, as weir as hundreds of pounds of boxed meats prepared by the local packers, are held here for shipment and at certain seasons of the year butter is stored here in large quantities. .\o 3i;itt(r Wh;it Kind of Fuel Von Burn, Whether Coal, Gas or Oil There is :i L E N N O X F U R N A C E Built to Burn That Fuel and S a v e Y o u Money.
