MASON CITY GLOBE-GAZETTE, JANUARY 7 · 1937 FIFTEEN GHEEN TO SPEAK HERE ON FEB. 15 Addresses Joint Meeting of Chamber of Commerce and Service Clubs. The Chamber of Commerce and Mason City service clubs will join in an evening meeting on Feb. 15 to hear James E. Gheen of New York, according .to. an announcement in the current issue o£ Mason City, news bulletin of the local chamber. · The bulletin points out that Mr. Gheen is a public relations coun- selor,_jisUh a nationwide experience as an after-dinner speaker. As a philosophical humorist he has no peer on the public plat- form. His Mason City date will be one of several in Iowa, including Fort Dodge, Cherokee, Eslherville and Algona. During J93E Mr, Gheen appeared at Chamber of Commerce affairs in a number of Iowa cities, including Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Red Oak and Spencer, and literally swept his listeners off their feet with his energy and enthusiasm, besides leaving them chuckling for weeks with the stories which illustrated his every point. The Waterloo Courier says that "the Chamber of Commerce was sold to 428 business and professional men and women of Waterloo as it was never-sold before*** Never in the history of the Chamber has there been such a meeting as far as anyone connected with the 1936 Chamber has been able to learn." At Cedar Rapids, wliere he went from Waterloo, Ihc Gazette speaks of his "contagious enthusiasm and sparkling wit."
