Olson in an interview with his pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Torvik of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, said he felt he was living in a remarkable age of machinery, transportation, television, to say nothing of the tele phone and radio. Olson was born in Lee County^ Illinois, Feb. 19, 1864, to Ole Olson and Carrie Espe. His father died when he was 6 after which his mother and three boys moved to a farm near Thor in 1872. He remembers that there were sod shanties caves or the deluxe ones, log shanties. He lived in one of the first frame houses. He recalls thai after a heavy rain people wouk carry out pails of water from the sod shanties. .Abqut 1880 when the railroad went through for which he helpec haul ties, Thor was founded. In those days Indians were a familiar sight. They hunted, fished and trapped hereabouts. There were no telephones in the homes at tha time. They used . h o m e m a d e - c a n dies for their lights. A son of Stewart Glaus, still operates a store there Olson's wife, Julie, died Jan. 30 1950. There are eight living chil dren. They are Theodore of Eagle Grove; Otto. Thor; Mrs. Torvald Larson, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Alice Hanson, Garner; Melvin, Eagle Grove; Clarence, Gerhard and Lawrence all of Thor. He moved to Eagle Grove in October, 1947, and is now a membtir of the Eagle G r o v e Evangelical Lutheran Church. Olson received ^ greetings from California, Canada,. Oregon, Illinois; ;nid many from Iowa on his birthday. Pastor and Mrs. Torvik and his children were among his many friends who helped celebrate his birthday during the afternoon and evening. , The nicknames Bobby or Peeler for police officers derive from Sir Robert Peel who first organized London's Scotland Yard in 1829. Plan to Mark Centennial in Wright County CLARION -T- Members of the Wright County Historical Society will meet at the district courtroom at 2 p.m. Friday to launch initial plans for a Wright County centennial celebration.
