MISSOURI VALLEY, July 11. UP) --John I. Long, associate editor of the Daily Times News and former publisher of the Harrison County News, died early today after a brief illness. The 64 year old veteran newspaperman had served in the journal- Jim field for 24 years. A former blacksmith. Long was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. He turned to journalism at the age of 40, publishing a number of Nebraska newspapers including the Columbus Daily News. He was president of the Lincoln highway bureau and a member, of the board of directors of the Blair (Nebr.) Bridge association. He was a leader in the campaign for improved roads, and took an active interest in local enterprises. The extent to which some people would go in a great cause is indicated by Alfalfa Bill Murray's Views Unchanged When he was a judge in New York court, W. Bernard Vause thought best punishment for criminals was whipping post. AnU now that he has been paroled after serving three years of a six- year sentence for using the mails to defraud, he still thinks so. He Is seeking presidential jiardon. SEEK NEW TRIAL ON 'BANK NIGHT' Attorney Files Motion After Newton Theater Owner Is Convicted. NEWTON. July 11. (jW--Attor- ney H. R, Hammer, Jr., today prepared to file a motion for a new trial In the case of George P. Bundling, Newton theater owner, who was found guilty yesterday on a charge of advertising a lottery known as "bank night." A district court ury returned a verdict of guilty late yesterday in the court of Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma. Judge Bechly gave Hammer until July 30 to file a motion {or a new trial, and set July 31 as tb.2 date for sentence. Hammer indicated he would appeal the case if his motion for a new trial is rejected. County Attorney P. J. Siegers meantime said he has received s number of telephone calls from other county attorneys requesting copies of the legal brief he used in prosecuting the case.
