The final autograph seeker was a 30-ish male who wanted him to sign copies of two of his old singles. "Ugh, rot these!" Fabian shouted in mock disgust. AT THEATRES I 7j The interview, which consumed most of his rest period between the 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. shows, was finally broken up by a group of female autograph seekers who had waited more than an hour to see the star.

In no time, I was recording and singing at record hops. I appeared on The Dick Clark Show and had big hits with 'I'm a 'Turn Me Loose' and 'Like a I worked like a dog for three years until I gave up singing." After he stopped singing, he moved to California and pursued an acting career that has included 25 films, six plays and many television shows. His most significant film roles were in "North to Alaska" and "The Longest Day." He became hooked on acting at 16 when he made his first film, "Hound Dog Man." which was directed by Don Siegel. Fabian considers his best work a role in an early '60s scries called Bus Stop in which he played a psychopath and was directed by Robert Altman. Lounpc Circuit He could not explain after a 12-year hiatus, he decided to return to singing.

"Possibly," he speculated, "because I hadn't done it that well the first time, I wanted to try it again." His first engagement after the long layoff was at an obscure club in an obscure little town Santa Maria in Northern California. "I was scared and very rusty," Fabian said. "It took about six months for me to be comfortable performing in clubs." Now he is a star on the Las Vegas-Reno-Tahoe hotel lounge circuit. His goals are set. "I want to do both acting and singing," he declared.

"I want to get a recording contract, but I probably have to get a few years of singing under my belt before 1 can do that." 652-1330 LOS ANGELES MSK Auto Park, 8447 Wilshire New Low Prices! Fabian, who is from South Philadelphia, has been plagued by his faulty singing ever since he was discovered, at the age of 15, by the manager of another Philadelphia tccn idol Frankie Avalon.

The manager was intrigued by Fabian's handsomeness and his offbeat name and ignored his inability to sing. "I felt controlled. I felt plastic. I felt like a puppet. How would you feel if you were put in a little box and taken out like an animal and told to go sing and then were put back in that box again? I would work 35, 45, 55 one-nighters in a row. And I was just a kid.

"My managers were aw-. ful. 1 hated them. All they wanted was money. They were pushing and pushing and pushing me to go out and make money.

When you are pushed out like that at an early age and become a success, you don't have time to stop and think and grow up. It was frightening, like a three-year nightmare. "I reached the point where I couldn't face it anymore. I was "in bad shape mentally then. One day, while flying to California to film a television show, I decided to quit singing.

After I did the show, I flew back to New York, got a lawyer and bought out my contract. After that I could breathe again. I vowed then that no one was going to put a yo-yo string on me ever again." The trim, handsome, personable, 31 -year-old singer interrupted those grim reminiscences to talk about the show that he had just finished a half an hour earlier. It was the first of three shows on his opening night at Knott's Berry Farm. The engagement, which began Sunday, closed Wednesday night.

Crowd Floored After telling himself over and over that the show had been excellent and that the crowd had been floored by it, he finally convinced himself that there was nothing to fret about and was to relax. The 2,150 people who were packed into the elegant John Wayne Theater did seem to enjoy the show, though it was far from excellent. Accompanied by a large band and two female singer-dancers, Fabian sang an assortment of oldies and standards. His assurance affability carried him through the show. Those assets were necessary since his voice lacked range, power and flexibility.

792-7139 'Daisy Miller' is something of a triumph for everyone concerned. This is Henry James' 'Daisy Miller' as played by Cyhill Shepherd in Peter Bogdanovich's handsome film version of the classic novella. It transfers to the screen simply and elegantly. 'Daisy Miller' says as much about pioneering in its way as do Jan Troell's 'The Emigrants' and 'The New Land'. It is to the tremendous credit of Bogdanovich and his screenwriter, Frederic Raphael, that they have succeeded in preserving so much of the spirit and the text of the novella and made it seem so important.

Bogdanovich's casting is as always, nearly flawless. Daisy, so orthrightly played by Miss Shepherd, is a figure of high comedy. 'Daisy Miller' is Bogdanovich's fifth feature, continuing a career that resolutely refuses to be typed in genre or style, thus carrying on the tradition of the oldtime Hollywood directors he so admires a romantic comedy that would have totally baffled the old-timers. You can learn more about America from watching this story about a nouveau-riche American girl from Schenectady in her collision with high European society in 1879 than you can from most pretentiously apocalyptic American movies that blow your brains out while pretending to rip the mask from contemporary society. Daisy is one of the sweetest mysteries in literature is she innocent, is she a flirt, is she bad, is she good? Bogdanovich's film brings to life a character who embodies much of the paradox of America.

In his previous films 'The Last Picture Show', 'What's BlY Seal Beach 431-9988, 'DAISY MILLER' HAS BEEN DIRECTED WITH FRESHNESS AND INTELLIGENCE the world of lost Americans abroad is skillfully recreated. 'Daisy Miller' is relevant to the latest debates of growing up in America. Much of the time Cybill Shepherd catches the gaiety and directness of 'Daisy Miller', the spontaneity of a spoiled but very likable person. She conveys that mixture of recklessness and innocence that bewildered the other Jamesian characters. Director Peter Bogdanovich has provided a sensitive glimpse of the hypocrisies and the contradictions of the past.
