"There's always a certain amount of risk in doing a play, because if it fails you're to blame. But I don't think anyone should become an actor with the sole aim of security.

There must be some challenge or the whole thing becomes meaningless." The star continued along the same vein. "You have to have enormous self-confidence to want to be an actor," he opined. "Fear of failure has no place in a player's mental makeup. That's why, though Hollywood has been exceedingly good to me, I've wanted to have another go at the stage medium. If I'm a success this time, I'll not blame the stage.

I'll just wait for another opportunity." One of the busiest stars in the theatrical business today, Douglas is winding up his starring role in "The Hook" at MGM, and reports early next month to Universal-International where he'll do a comedy, "Three on a Match," with Mitzi Gaynor and Gig Young. Other projects on the star's calendar include "The List of Adrian Messenger," which John Huston will direct for Joel Productions with Edward Lewis producing; and "Montezuma." for which Huston also is mentioned as director. In addition, Douglas is mulling other properties in which he may or may not star. Incidentally, Perlberg-Seaton's "The Hook," with Korean battle scenes eliminated, could easily be a platform presentation, Douglas says, since most of the drama takes place in a rusty old freighter. Director George Seaton makes the confinement deliberate to tell this story of men in wartime.

Steiger Paged for Play, Film There's a deal in the making whereby Rod Steiger would star on the London stage in Fred Broughton's production of "Who Saved the Plowboy?" and in a subsequent film based on the show. Frank Gilroy, who authored the drama, is now writing the screen version. Meanwhile, director Bill Colleran is en route to London for discussions with Steiger regarding "Posture of Triumph." which Colleran is to direct for Dennis McDonald and Michael Lawrence. Story deals with the activities of a CIA agent who shadows a Soviet spy at a famous hotel in New York. It isn't often that a player in a New York show is tabbed to repeat his role in the film version.

However, James Mitchell, who portrays Marco in "Carnival," has been informed by film producer Arthur Freed that he's interested in having the actor re-create his role for the MGM picture. Mitchell is now appearing in "Carnival" at Philharmonic Auditorium with Anna Maria Alber-ghettl. They'll return to New York after the local run to complete commitments; then Mitchell will come back here for the picture. Philip Barry Jr. has acquired rights to "Outside the Gates," a three-act play by Lorenzo Semple.

Barry plans to meet Frederick Brisson in Paris regarding production of the show on Broadway next winter. i. Stewart, MR. H0BBS TAKES A VACATION) Bqma Sptmbr ALEX H0Bls SR. of words out of a chorus than 0 CM a-H2I Chevalier, ieesiea (COOLED BY REFRIGEKA1IOH) Cinema Books 'Connection he does.
