L. Harvey-J. Fonda WALK ON WILD SIDE BELLE SOMMERS TRI CITY 7U -2025 San Bernardm Tony Curtis THE OUTSIDER BLAST OF SILENCE BY ALBERT GOLDBERG The 'UCLA-Svrriphony chestra and A a 11 a Choir conducted bv Wagner honored Lukas Foss by performing his "Prairie" as the principal item of Saturday night's in Royce Hall. Although one section of the work had been; performed last year when Cart Sandburg, the author of the text, received an honor ary degree from UCLA, this was the first local hearing of the complete composition. Mr.

Foss wrote "Prairie" back in 1942 when he was only 20. and a considerably different kind of composer than he is. nowadays. Now he is committed to the serial type of composition with all its involvements and experimentation. Then he was concerned with a more ro mantic and theatrical sort of music, a little touched by Stravinsky and Mahler, and unashamed to e6 in for the big machine kind of thing replete with atmospheric mood painting and rousing dramatic effects.

Ample Invention No matter what music he writes his talent; is un mistakable, and there is a plentiful supply of it in "Prairie." It is a large scaled work that keeps chorus, or chestra and soloists busy with appropriate and ample invention and sustains with consistent interest the home ly, rhapsodic a a of Sandburg's poems. The ten der moods-, are convincing, the climaxes resonant and surely calculated, and it all captures a distinctly American quality despite the composer's European birth. The chorus sang with the forceful assurance one expects as a matter of course from a group trained by Mr. Wagner, and the orchestra performed its duties with equal confidence. Caterina Micieli did some exquisite singing in the soprano solo "0 Prairie Girl," Richard Robinson declaimed the tenor part stirringly, and the lesser solo roles were sung ably by Mariquita Moll, contralto, and James Tippey, bass.

To beginthe program. Richard Dufallo conducted a 'Concert bv Ed ward Applebaum," a UCLA student who knows what he is about but who has not yet discovered armhing very original to say. To end, Mr. Foss took charge of the orchestra of DON'T BE 0111 II If ilrisfit, thin and endcr-wTftit MrtQM ftf poor pnte nr poor trt hiv jt uk a to-On. 1 1 1 in wtijrM amlding caloric plot amina.

And just to keep things going meanwhile, he'll play the Seattle World's Fair, do a picture in India, and' one day at the Barnham Festival in Bridgeport this summer. "How much?" I asked. "Quite a bit," said Bob. "You know they talk about Crosby having all that monev, but you're Mr. Moneybags." "Whatta you mean Crosby sends me a CARE age every Christmas." Hope won't have time to make the President's birthday party, but he'll be 'in Washington, D.C..

for son Tony's graduation. "He's been accepted for Harvard," crowed Bob. "And that's just a stepping stone to "you-know-what." Tony can keep up with his old man in the funny line department. Bob took him to see a big. sickening musical on Broadway.

Tony's review: "I feel like I just swallowed a 10-pound lollipop." Ann Miller's been quoted as saying she has received less than a million as settlement from Arthur Cameron (she sued for 7 million). I hear she settled for less than the interest on a million for one year. Anent the annulment, it was worded "an annulment granted to a purported marriage." Paramount finally made up their minds as to who will, play Jackie Gleason's dignified wife in "Poppa's Delicate Condition." They've chosen Glynis Johns. While I was in New York, Robin Chandler Lynn told me of her coming marriage to Angier Riddle Duke, State Department protocol chief. But I was sworn to secrecy.

Cholly Knickerbocker had taken it upon himself to write nothing could be farther from the truth and'gave his source as Angier Riddle himself, when Duke hadn't even talked to him. So they were married yesterday in McLean, and the President and Jackie attended their wedding reception. Robin made manv friend here when sh was Mrs. Jeffrey Lynn.
