3c0anstlr0Omftf 3 WED.JULY18,1962-Parfllf Koufax to Return for Treatment SID JIFF THIS DAY IN SPORTS 1 a mm Waterfield BY FRANK FINCH Times Staff Representative CINCINNATI Sandy Koufax, removed from Tuesday night's am Reductions -To on Stand with the Reds after pitching only one ineffective inning, will arrive in Los Angeles today for treat rn and Phil Ortega, have respective records of 6-5 and 0-2. Thus, Koufax' presence in the regular rotation is of incalculable value to L.A.'s cause. Dugout Dope Victory for Don DryBdale 06-4) tonight would give him 17 wins for the third time in his Dodger career. Big was 17-9 in 1957 and 17-13 in 1959 Drysdale's six-game winning streak will be in peril, however, since he never has won a game here in five ca reer decisions. He'll be facing southpaw Jim O'Toole (8-10).

On April 18 here O'Toole handed Los Angeles its worst defeat of the season, 14-0, with a four-hitter. ment of his ailing, index finger. It means that the great southpaw, a 14-game winner, will be taken out of the league -leading Dodgers' pitching rotation for the time being, at least. Koufax seriously hurting himself," said Alston, Alston had Don Drvsdale standing by while Koufax warmed up before the game. Drysdale is slated to pitch against the Reds tonight, but he could have started in Sandy's stead if necessary.

Although Koufax was unimpressive while warming up, he decided to give it the old college try, Club Needs Him Loss of Koufax for any extended time could deal a mortal blow to the Dodgers' pennant chances. The major leagues' leading strikeout artist and author of a no-hitter, Sandy has notched 14 victories, second on the club to Drysdale's 16 wins. The other two members of the team's Big Four, Stan Williams and Johnny Podres, have posted a combined total of 13 victories, while the two youngsters, Joe Moeller Coach Bob Waterfield engages in a frank discussion of the Rams and himself in the following question and answer session as the team prepares to open training camp Thursday. The Rams play their first game against the Redskins Aug. 11 for Times Charity.

This will be Waterfield's third season as head coach. His overall record shows eight wins, 17 defeats and one tie. He had a 4-7-1 record in 1960 and a 4-10 record in 1961. QUESTION What will the Rams have to offer their fans this season ANSWER I'm optimistic, to the extent it is the first time I've said so since I've been here. If some of our rookies are good enough to beat out the veterans 222 No.

What can you say to that? A I don't think there are any grounds for such an opinion. We run basically the same plays as the Packers and Browns. I dont think anyone in the league does anything startlingly different with the exception of the 49ers' shotgun offense which had people fooled for a while. Is the shotgun offense a thing of the past Cardenas, ada Piaison and MEN-AGES 17 TO 50 "Urgently Needed" TRAIN FOR HIGH PAT JOBS III Hank Foiles off Sandy's successor, Ed Roebuck, put the game beyond recall. Cardenas Homers Koufax's string of scoreless innings snapped at 18 1-3 in the opening act when Wally Post pounded a two-run dou ble following singles by Car denas and Robinson. 1 When it was obvious that Koufax couldn't continue, Roebuck faced the Reds in the second inning, and was tagged for Cardenas' sixth homer with Don Blasmgame rnrhot aboard. Two-baggers by Johnny Roseboro and Willie Davis, and singles by Possum Bur- right and Jim Gilliam cut Cincy's lead to 4-2 in the top of the third but not for long. I al More Homers Roebuck, who'd yielded only three homers in 58 in nings prior to Tuesday's debacle, saw Pinson's 17th clout sail over the center- field wall in the bottom oi the third, with F6iles' fifth following in the same direc tion moments later. That made it b-z, and 1- again the Dodgers came on to chase Purkey.

With Ron Fairly and 1X1 JUU1 upimuii. A I spoke to Red Hickey about it recently. I gathered that he has abandoned it. However, he'll probably keep it in back of his mind and spring it sometime against someone. How do you explain your own record which has certainly been' a disappointment to Ram fans? 'A It has been a problem, of personnel.

It dates back three years to the uprooting of the line. In 1958, we won eight games, and in 1959, all of a sudden, we won only two. Something went haywire. We've been unbalanced ever since. (The Rams gave up nine players including several important linemen in a trade for Ollie Matson prior to the 1959 season.) Wilson Presented Morale Issue When did you make up your mind to trade Tom Wilson and Frank Ryan to the Browns? A We had been giving it thought.

As you know, we had some problems with Wilson. Although he is a good runner, when one player raps another player, it's unwise. There are things that chould be left unsaid. It became a morale issue. It couldn't be overlooked I'm very fond of Ryan but conditions are such that we can't keep four quarterbacks.

I feel we have a couple (Roman Gabriel and Ron Miller) who will be around for 10 years. The change will be good for Frank, too. He knew that here he would have had to sit on the bench. Whether he plays for the Browns or not remains to be seen but at least he'll be on an equal footing with their other quarterback Jim Ninowski. Considering the experiences of Wilson and Joe Marconi, is there anything to the feeling that you run a doghouse? A -The idea is ridiculous.

I wish everyone would have a great year. But who would you rather see running with the ball, Marconi, Bass or Wilson? It boiled down to that. Bass had an average of nearly 7 yards per play from the line of scrimmage. He gave our only long runs. How could you take him out of there? Sure, Marconi was dissatisfied.

A good player is never sat-isfied to sit onthe bench. I hope he has a great year. I hope they all do." Bratkowski Securely on Top How do you evaluate your quarterbacks? A I expect a fine year fromZeke Bratkowski. I intend to start with him. I don't know too much about the others yet except from what I have seen in pictures.

I thought Gabriel in the recent All-Star game looked great. He completed 12 out of 18 and had a couple dropped. The thing that impressed me most is that he didn't panic under pressure. But we're going with Bratkowski. He knows it and all the others are going to know it Zeke can throw a beautiful ball.

When he can get set and has time he's as good as anyone. He didn't get the protection he should have had last season because we had to open with two rookie guards, men who had never been in a pro game. Is it true that Hamp Pool, your offensive coach, isn't popular with some of the men because he's too tough on them? A I regard Hamp Pool as the greatest offensive coach in the business. I don't feel any differently than I always have about him. And if there is any coach go-" ing to tell, off any player on the squad, I'm the guy who does it.

I think we've got high morale now and we're going to keep it. Has the last couple of years done anything to shake your confidence? A No. I just feel we had a building job and if we bring in enough players we are going to get it done. Are you the worrying type? A I don't know a coach who isn't. Doesn't Mind Dressing Room Do you resent having writers ask you embarrassing questions after a game? A I don't think the reporters ever try to hurt my feelings when they ask questions.

I try to answer the best way I can. Sometimes you can't because you really do not see everything from, the sidelines. I do not mind the questions and I don't expect anyone to hold back to save my feelings. I hope I can win more games, then I won't have as many difficult questions to answer. Do you think the game is getting too complicated? A No, I think it is more exciting than ever.

The players have more to think about today because of the shifting defenses than they did when I was playing. The quarterback has a more difficult job. He has to be able to recognize and cope with the changing situations. But the fans are watching an exciting game. Do you control the game very often by sending plays in from the sidelines? A -We'll send in a few plays', perhaps 10 or so in a game.

The problem now is calling the play at the line of scrimmage which we rarely did in my time. Now a quarterback will cali audibles at least a fifth of the time, maybe a quarter of the plays. What can we expect from Harland Svare, your new defensive coach? A I have a lot of confidence in him and he's going to have a lot better material to work with than Don Paul did. If Marlin McKeever stays healthy he's going to make a big difference in the defense. He looks great.

He moves like a cat Nothing can replace true physical ability and he has it Frank Howard aboard, Roseboro tripled into the right- It's important for you to know. And easy for you to tell.
