Rene Anselmo, who is here from Mexico City directing operations of the new station, is very confident of its success.

He knows that the station will tap the largest concentration of Spanish-speaking people on this continent outside of Mexico City some 85,000. He has no fears of "the UHF curse" and its necessary converter. "The only trouble with UHF stations in VHF markets has been programming," he said. "They had no programs of consequence how could they compete?" From Bullfights to Soccer KMEX-TV programs will primarily be shows produced by Anselmo for Don Emilio Azarraga's giant Tele-sistema in Mexico City, which are the backbone of television throughout Latin America. These programs range from musical and variety programs through soap operas, dramas, comedy shows and sports.

The sports includes two hours of bullfights from Mexico City every Sunday night, jai-alai, boxing, wrestling and Mexican soccer. The interest in bullfights here may send many a viewer who knows not a word of Spanish out for a converter. Although Telesistem also distributes American shows dubbed into Spanish (Tightrope is enormously popular; so is Perry Mason), Anselmo says they will not be shown here. However, he hopes to present shows produced in Europe and never shown in the United States such as Le Petit Teatre from France. KMEX-TV will be the second Spanish station in the United States.

Anselmo and his associates opened the first, KWEX, in San Antonio last February. It has been enormously successful, he said. Eventually, a network of Spanish stations will be operating in this country, including one in New York with its large Puerto Rican population. 'A Public Service Record' Associated with Anselmo and Don Emilio in the local station are Julian Kaufman of XETV in Tijuana and Frank Fouce, theater magnate. Anselmo, a Bostonian who was a producer of plays and musicals in Mexico City prior to television "Two for the Seesaw," "Bells Are said there are around 900,000 TV sets in Mexico some 600,000 in Mexico City.

His organization covered President Kennedy's recent visit to Mexico for the American TV networks sent 14 hours of tape by fighter plane to our station in San Antonio and they ran all 14 hours which must be the public service world's Musical shows and soap operas are the strongest programs in Latin America the soap operas, however, do not go on and on like Ma Perkins but end after 10-12 weeks and a new story with a new cast starts.
