"The Mute Wife" is one of those pieces that come up more or less regularly, add their moderate quota of amusement, and are forgotten again until the next time, Antonio Cobos' choreogra phy, to music of Scarlatti sonatas orchestrated by Sou- lima Stravinsky, tells the tale of the speechless wife whose husband did not know when he was well off. He enlists the aid of a surgeon who restores her talking abil ity, and thereafter she makes up for lost time by chatter ing incessantly. Attractive Foolery Nina Novak, a beautiful dancer who has not had particularly grateful roles this season, took the part of the wife and endowed her with charm and character.

Others have made more of the castanets which portray the unloosened tongue but all in all it was an attractive bit of foolery. Miguel Terekhov scored some comic points as the red-headed doctor and Alar Howard displayed more maturity as the distracted husband than he has in some roles. "Raymonda," which had made an unscheduled debut the previous evening as an end piece, opened the pro gram this time. It is a light- hearted affair, without any pretense to depth or irnmod- erate excitement, and it was done with a good deal of evi dent enjoyment by a cast that brought forward Mere dith Bayliss. Eugene Slavin, Gioconda Filippini, Irene Minor, Alan Howard, Yvonne Chouteau, Gertrude Tyven, Irina Borowska and Frederic Franklin.
