But both come through finally, rehabilitated, and trap the killer, too; so maybe that phase is all right, especially as the lady is lovely. Pedro Lopez Lagar i3 fine as the hero.

Douglas, it seems, has optioned an original story by Irwin Gielgud tentatively called "Garrick's Gayeties," which is about the famous 18th century players.

He has a plan for the film for his Bryna Productions, has phoned Miss Garland in England and is sending the script to her. Douglas has been arranging his release from his Warner Bros, contract in order to activate his own organization as well as to accept outside commitments. He has two pictures for Winchester, the Howard Hawks-Edward Lasker company, the first of which is "The Big Sky." As the Gielgud script sets it forth the Garrick subject will tell how he met Peg as a wine merchant at a party and she discovered his gifts as an actor and promoted his career. Later he became indifferent to her. There will be numerous songs for Miss Garland in the stage action of the story.

GENE EVANS SUPER HEAVY IN 'SYNDICATE' Gene Evans, whose up-and-coming attributes as a -screen performer could never be denied these days, will have, a heavy to end all heavies in "The Syndicate" when the King Bros, start at MGM Told Munching turkey sandwiches in the MGM commissary one hot summer day seven years ago, Harold Arlen, composer; E. Y. Harburg, lyricist, and Sig Herz'ig, librettist, formed a pact to write a musical play. They annexed Fred Saidy, screen to make up a quartet. Nat Goldstone, the agent, obligingly turned up with a play written by Dan and Lilith James on woman's rights in Civil War days.

Out of this was evolved a mirthful, tuneful story of the hoopskirt-bloomer warfare, titled "Blpomef Girl," and -the piece ran 701 times on Broadway. Gene Mann is now recreating this stage success for his sec ond musical at the outdoor Greek Theater for two weeks beginning next Monday. Dick Haymes is playing the starring role now in San Francisco. Frances McCann has the top feminine role of Evelina. Josephine Baker Has Own Chateau Josephine Baker, who lives in hotel rooms, trains an airplanes during her cross-country personal appearance tour, resides in luxurious comfort in France.

Her home is a 14th-century castle five miles 'from Paris. COTTON BLOSSOM' TAKES ON NEW STATURE Even MGM is commencing to put stress on "The Cotton Blossom" as a follow-up to "Show Boat." The Argentine film at any rate has merit enough to justify its being illumined with English titles, and it's too bad it isn't.

For in spite of such obvious fan-catchers as a wild" cafe dance, a glimpse of a mad marijuana plus a circus and some cafe musical entertainment, the picture is a strong one. Caught in a Web The subject alone is sensational, while its showing of the ways in which the poor fly, caught in the web, is held there, is terrifying. The doctor hero is caught in the marijuana net when seeking to learn the murderer' of his addict wife, he himself smokes a few times in or der to get in complete touch with the underworld. Then when he desperately tries to rid himself of the habit, he finds he has not only himself, to fight, but the tricks of the dope dealers also. MST 3 DAYS!
