Carrol Naish Is debating ap-; pearing in the George Abbotts AND STAGE Los 3nffelcs Cimes aanatneflF aa. i ously winning praise as the star of "Payment Deferred," Laughton has been 4a leading acting light in London, on Broadway and' in Paris where he was generously acclaimed for roles performed in French! And, of course, on the screen. The Experimental Theater, incidentally, will have slightly largeE quarters this season, moving across the street from its former building on 39th St. to the Maxine Elliott Theater.

Cuff stuff: John Garfield has agreed to star in the second Experimental Theater Production, "Skipper Next to God," by Jan de Hartog, whose "This Time Tomorrow" premiered this week under Theatre Guild auspices It's about a young sea captain and his attempts to find a haven for hisboatload of displaced persons Some well- zeft," a play about Haym Solomon, patriot of the American Revolution, by Norman Leasing, and. 'Another new co-operative theatrical project, New Stages, has been formed by another collection of Broadway Thespians; its aim, a permanent producing company A note in all this joining activity is the separation of a leading lady in theatrical management from the American Repertory Theater, disastrously besieged by tough luck last season when it dropped a total estimated to be nearly $500,000 She's Miss Cheryl Crawford, who gave her active all to the project in its formative stages but now finds herself more and more concerned with personal production, such as her highly successful "Brigadoon," and a new musical being written by Alan Jay Lern-er, who, wrote "Brigadoon," and Kurt Weill, composer of "Street Scene," "Knickerbocker Holiday," "Lady in the Dark," "One Touch of Venus," and, you should pardon the expression, "Hollywood Pinafore." NEW YORK, Nov. -8. (a5) Charles Laughton is abandoning the heavier financial emoluments of Hollywood to stair in the first production of the Experimental Theater- on Broadway, his own adaptation of Bertold Brecht the play in which, he starred recently at Hollywood's Coronet Theater.

Clarence Derwent. chairman of the Experimental Theater and president of Actors' Equity As-, sociation, expressed gratification that the program of the American National Theater and Academy, of which the Experimental Theater is a focal adjunct, has assumed sufficient stature to attract an actor of Laughton's ability and accomplishments. "Mr. Laughton, in spite of his great success in Hollywood," Derwent said, 'has never lost his interest in the theater, and we are proud that he is joining hands with A.N.T.A. and the Experimental Theater in our plans for stimulating tneater activity in this country." Since the story is partially based on Guy de-Maupassant's "Boule de Suif," pretty Miss Presle had to submit to a special regime to gain the extra poundage needed. Despite the fact that her measurements were picture-perfect when she started, she became overweight at Director Christian Jacque's request. Cummings is the producer of "Fiesta" and has made arrangements to film most of "Viva Zapata!" his forthcoming screen biography of Emiliano Zapata, colorful firebrand of Mexico's Revolution, south of the border.

Cummings observes that the few visitors from here who do not acquaint themselves with social customs of that sister republic are creating the same misunderstanding that made the golf-knickered, ostentatious American tourist an object of ridicule in Europe in the 20's. However, the producer points out that it is usually the tour ist's very friendliness and gre-gariousness that get him disliked. Cummings has prepared a detailed memo outlining major differences of national custom for the edification of members of his troupe who will accom pany him to Mexico. Bissell Writing Story Actor Whit Bissell is writing a screen story based on the life of his ancestor, Daniel Bissell, who received a Purple Heart from George Washington. New York producers are reported in terested in a stage version.

MICAELA JIMENEZ Takes part as vocalist in Padua Hills Theater's new stage show, "Festivales." Another Fine Play Arrives From London 'Winslovr Boy' Staged and Acted With High Degree of Perfection 1 BY BROOKS ATKIXSOJf NEW YORK, Nov.

8. Let's take for today's, lesson "The Winslow Boy," by Terence Ratti- gan, author of "French Without Tears" and Mistress Mine." The Winslow Boy" is the best play that has come out of England this season. Moreover, it is, staged1 and acted with a perfection that only the English seem able to achieve. Using an actual incident from before World War Rattigan has written an overwhelming drama about a small boy who is unjustly accused of stealing money in a naval school, where, apparently, matters of personal honor are strictly adhered to. The Winslow boy's father, who is a man of tenacious and admirable convictions, very nearly wrecks the family's security in a fierce attempt to compel the navy to hear the.

case and exonerate the boy. When Rattigan is stating the case in the first act he is superb, both in feeling and in craftsmanship, and at least during that act "The Winslow Boy" is a deeply moving drama with dimensions greater than the poignant little story it is telling. Defects Develop In fact, it is a pretty good play throughout its length, worth anybody's interest. But during the second act Rattigan Degms to emerge as not so much a dranv atist as a play contriver who is devoting his skill to arranging Ecenes that are effective in the thgater. In the end he seems to have nothing to contribute to the story out of his perceptions as art artist.

He -delights in the atrical mysteries, like the insuf ferably pompous barrister who conceals his motives behind a theatrical mask of indifference and condescension. He wins a Jund of bogus sympathy for an ineffectual family attorney by introducing a gratuitous proposal scene which he forgets as soon as he has acmevea nis feet. I Sincerity Questioned After awhile you begin to distrust Rattigan's sincerity. For he seerns to be less interested in the moral values of a fine theme than in the effects, he is able to demise in the theater. Well, that may be too severe flJ A ACAIMST ft if i-tti A WAttfB IMS.

As a matter of fact, he is writ ing about the ethical inviolabil ity of civil rights.

The Ameri can approach would be to make resounding stump speech in defense of individual freedom under the law a method as ar tificial as Rattigan's last act puppetry. But with the decent reticence of an English writer Rattigan chronicles the Winslow case purely in terms of the home life of an English family. Experts Play Roles- It is obvious that the English today have a special gift for carefully detailed performances. Although American acting has more vitality, it rarely touches the Immaculate perfection of the best English group work. Under Glen By am Shaw's direction, "The Winslow Boy" is brilliantly played by expert actors.

Alan Webb's fine-grained acting of the Winslow father is something worth particular cheering. Add to Mr. Webb's character perception the adroit ness of his technique and you have a full-length portrait of rare quality. He is ably abetted by Valerie White, who is playing a loyal and earnest daugh ter with insight and honesty; and by an excellent cast in general. The part of the pompous barrister is hokum like William Gillette in "Sherlock Holmes," as Ward Morehouse has pointed out.

On those terms Frank Al lenby is playing the part effec tively with the drive of benign menace. In sum, the only im perfections in "The Wihslow Boy" derive from Rattigan's penchant for hokum devices in a play that deserves the most discriminating writing. Copyrleht. 1947.
