4 PARTm 1 European's Story of India Winner of $10,000 Prize Contlict of Old and New in Mexico Portrayed AND AUTHORS LcsangelesCimcs is in his home that an Indian really weighs the balance of progress thrust upon him by his long association with the West." Mr. Hitrec's writing career started at the age of 17. An intense curiosity about lives and struggles of Indian; peoples, sharpened to compassion by a continued and extern sive exploration of the country, resulted during the war years in a series of short stories. which have appeared in half a dozen American national maga- zines. On his arrival in the United.

States in May, 1946, Mr. Hitrec, married Miss Leyla Saygin, whom he had met in India. Julius Caesar Lives Again in Pages of Graphic Novel Thornton Wilder Makes Issues That Brought About Assassination Seem as Those of Today BT PAUIi JORD AX-SMITH, Times Book Review Editor THE IDES OF MARCH. By Thornton Wilder. Harper: $2.75.

In this novel Mr. Wilder attempts to re-create an important period in the life of Julius Caesar and to tell dramatically of the events that led to hi3 violent death. The Caesar we meet in these pages is not the one who so painfully and slowly revealed himself to most of us through his Commentaries, nor the one who was intro-. quietly, is enlivened by humorous incidents, such as a rare operatic performance, and winds up' with a violent climax. To the old maxim, "Mexicans have faith in two things: peace in the cemetery, and wealth from the lottery," is added a third faith: "the future of our children." MILTQN MERLIN.

Connecticut Youths Meet Adventures STRONGHOLD. By Donald Barr Chidsey. Doubleday: $3. Back in 1808 Habakkuk Jones and John Rellison were apprenticed to Judge Watts up on the Connecticut seaboard where Mr. Jefferson's Embargo Act was not too popular.

Therefore, Americans being what they are and always have been, it was natural that such young sailor lads join in the game of helping ships slip out against the law of the land and past the sharp eyes of the British. It was natural that John, tempted by love of adventure and gain that might come to him thereby, should break his terms of apprenticeship and run off to sea; natural that Habakkuk, a loyal fellow, should nevertheless, in course of piloting ships in dangerous waters, be taken to sea against his will. So in the course of events both lads became familiar with a world of action and with strange lands before they returned to 'settle in the. Connecticut town of their upbringing. Pair Grow Apart Habakkuk married the judge's daughter.

Deliverance, and carried on with the shipbuilding and trade ventures barely begun by his old master. John brought back an exotic wife not unknown to Habakkuk. Besides being a tale of early American seagoing adventure, this novel holds the story of two men destined by their natures to grow apart; John to disintegrate and lose hold on the virtues he seeemed to have in his youth; Habakkuk to grow stronger under difficulties. A well told historical yarn with abundance of STEP DOWN. ELDER BROTHER.

By Josephina Niggli. Rinehart: $3. Most books about Mexican life exploit the sensational and picturesque; few dig deeper into the struggle of a people in a process of great change. Josephina Niggli is one of these few, as shown in her one-act plays and her recent collection of sketches, "Mexican Village." This, her first novel, is also her most ambitious project. It is, a considerable triumph in' storytelling as well as an interpretation of contemporary Mexico as a dramatic conflct between the old and the new.

The time is the 1940's; the place, the northern city of Monterrey, proud of its new industries and thriving business but still haunted by' ghosts of the past. A new generation, cutting across all class lines, revolts against tradition with a belief in a new a different future. Change Comes Swiftly The Vasquez de Anda family were Creole gentlefolk, equally aware of their' role in Mexican history and their origins in Spain, conforming strictly -to established etiquette. But in a short period of six weeks this family becomes a symbol of explosive, powerful changes. Dominated by the elder brother, Uncle Agapito, a banker, the family finally breaks the mold in a crisis.

Domingo, elder brother in the younger generation, is the protagonist. -His love for the mysterious Magara, an eternally beloved, eternally elusive Xtabay of the Mayan legend; his concern for Sera-fina, the servant girl who bears his younger brother's child, and his final discovery of a new loyalty and new dedication, cover the main portion of the story. Other Characters Drawn But it is richly peopled with others: his two contrasting sisters, Sofia and Brun-hilda; his belligerent younger brother Cardito; the ambitious, practical mestizo, Mateo; the returned expatriate, Jorge Palafox; the saloonkeeper, Don Primitivo, who served with Villa; Uncle Lucio, who has a passion for correspondence courses. The plot, which begins L-J, PRIZE-WINNER Joseph George Hi tree's "Son of the Moon" will be published March 10. It won $10,000 for its author in contest.

Macnjillan: $3.50. A few years ago Pearl Buck wrote the most brilliant book of her career, a little known essay entitled "Of, Men and Women," and now Virginia Chase in a fascinating novel gives the same theme and idea a fictional treatment which is actually the essence of realism and fact. Barriers Faced In an eastern city of moderate size during 1940 Laurie Drummond, housewife and mother, suddenly faced the bitter knowledge that her life had come to a standstill. For her husband Don, the success he had achieved in business, though hard won, was a stimulating challenge to greater and easier attainments. But Laurie at 40, after the years of struggle and care for family survival, had no such interesting prospects.

Her two children, a son and a daughter, went away to college. An overprotective mother, Laurie had never spared herself in their behalf, yet home and parents meant little to these young people, absorbed in their own ideas of living. With the children not home, Laurie, always an active worker, tried all the well-i known time-killers for idle women." Laurie vS an educated, capable woman, and she realized there must be real work in the world which she could do. Before she overcame the stagnant condition which enveloped her life there were social and ernptional barriers which had to be eliminated. How this was accomplished makes a story that is remarkable for its perceptive qualities and dramatic climaxes.

Home Loses Ground Though few women think of it, the affairs of the mod-, era world are passing them up. And It is largely women's for failing to accept responsibility in a world made to suit men. deplorable as it may seem; the home is no longer the center of family interest. For one thing, children today receive most, if not all, of their education outside the home. Woman's sphere, after the children are reared, is designed to crumble.

The title of "Discovery" is from Edwin Arlington Robinson: "For when a woman is left too much alone, Sooner or later she begins to think; And no man knows what then she may discover." IRENE ELWOOD. Mr.

Hitrec was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. He went to India in 1932. He says, "The novel itself will, I very much hope, dispel the illusion that India is populated exclusively by beggars, bejeweled mahara-jahs and that nothing ever happens there except famines and Hindu-Moslem rioting. 8-1087 Sin Town; Lady From Cheyenng duced to U3 in formal biographies. Mr. Wilder trie3 to let us know the Caesar whom Catullus reviled; whom Cleopatra honored; the man Caesar, known to Cicero and Cornelius Nepos; to his family, court, friends and enemies. And, of course, through these, we come to a warmer appreciation of the man and hi3 secret purposes. Interpretation Supplied 4 As the author remarks in hi3 note to the book, "historical reconstruction is not among "the primary aims of this work;" and.

he further reminds hi3 reader that the chronology has been arranged to suit his own purpose and not that of the strict historian; nor dq3 he pretend that the extracts from letters, journals and commonplace books out of which the stirring story unfolds are the veritable leavings of Caesar, Cornelius Nepos, Cicero, or Cleopatra. But facts are not always the signposts to truth; in sooth, they often point quite falsely. They need interpretation. And it seems to thi3 reader that Mr. Wilder, from the material at hand, open to any thesi3 writer, has' done notably well and that because he knows people, because he has sympathy and is gifted with a rare imaginative sense.

Letters Seem Real Thus it comes about that the letters seem real enough; Caesar comes to U3 Warm and alive. What he say3 and thinks seems real to the modern reader, and the sympathy and interest of that reader are at once' enlisted, for we have known leaders in our time surrounded by friends, enemies, responsibilities such as these. Cicero la the old orator we knew who had just retired from the Senate and could not help making speeches to prospective biographers; Catullus is the vain, ill-tempered poet who used to borrow money from us and always referred to U3 as "an exploiter;" Brutus i3 familiar because he has many times appeared in Washington, using various nom de plumes; and Cleopatra? Well, she is even more familiar. Problems as of Today No, the people are our contemporaries, for all their costumes; and their problems, even that of state religion and religious freedom which Caesar here debates, are quick with the throb of modern life. And the suspense that quickens the reader's interest here, as enemies close around Caesar, is no less because we have read a bit of history.

Mr. Wilder's novel may not become what i3 called a "best seller" but those who appreciate good writing and deep insight into character will, I believe, cherish it as one of this distinguished author's best novels. PENS THEME Virginia Chase writes about a middle-aged woman seeking new interests in "Discovery." De Rais and Joan of Arc Contrasted THE SAINT AND THE DEVIL. By Frances Winwar. Harper: $3.75. Author of popular biographies Life of the Heart" about George Sand; "American of Walt Whitman; "Poor Splendid Wings" of the romantics,) Frances Winwar has taken a subject much written about in Joan of Arc and has made it different and interesting by combining the biography with a contrasting study of the man who was supposed to be the model for "Bluebeard." The subtitle for her book is "Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais: a Biographical Study in Good and Evil." Beautifully written, though sometimes a trifle archaic and frequently confusing, the book makes the most of the horrors in the life of De Rais, rising to quite a savage and ironic tone in the sections devoted to that astonishing man. Since Joan's story is better known, the reader will be more curious about Gilles and the crimes he hid behind a facade of scholarship, gallantry and the giving of funds to establish churches.

Deviltry Masked Gilles de Rais was a marshal of France, and he shared in Joan's victories. But before she had fully established the Dauphin on his throne, won back from the English, De Rais retired to the pursuits he preferred: tenderness with small children whom he later murdered. In public he was a voluptuary in religion, putting on rich pageants and plays, giving high color to the church. But in private he was a devil. Miss Winwar- says: "Gilles de Rais with his chapels and itinerant consistoryt his piety and munificence, his glorious past and his present scholarly employment, was, on the very face of things, too good to be true."
