The result is a kind of "Peyton Place" of the South, told in the leisurely half-screen, half-stage style of so many of these Cinemascopes, but a work that, thanks to the dogged building power of the script by Irving Revetch and Harriet Frank Jr. andto Martin Ritt's exacting direction, adds up to quite a commentary, in seriocomic terms, on life in Deep Dixie. Also, it is better than "Peyton Place." DESPITE ACCENTS, BRAVURA AND BITE All this is accomplished in the face of the fact that "The Long, Hot Summer" is acted by a transplanted Hollywood troupe whose origin is sometimes made painfully plain in acquired accents and the overdone red make-up on the males.

But again, as with "Peyton's" New England, the magnificent simplicity of the background (shot, actually, in Louisiana, but with no loss of verisimilitude) makes a powerful persuader that "you are there." And as the stories rather than story unfold the players do take on the special characteristics of the place and their part in it Their performances have cumulative bite. The concept is bold and bawdy, containing some allusions that I would hesitate to quote in a family newspaper. Essentially it details the clash between two strong, stubborn men Orson Welles as Varner, who runs Frenchman's Bend, and Paul Newman as Ben Quick, a drifter and suspected, barn burner who moves in as a tenant farmer. Caught between these are, variously, Varner's weak, crybaby son, Anthony Franciosa; his unwed daughter, called "Sister," Joanne Woodward; Franciosa's willing wife, the beautiful, blond Lee Remick, and a neighbor, one of a "decayed gentry," who pays court to Miss Woodward but is dominated by his mother. This is Richard Anderson, with Mabel Albertson as the mother.

Angela Lansbury is Minnie, the woman in town whom old Varner visits when he is lonesome. WELLES DOMINANT AS BIG POPPA Welles is terrific as the driving, blustering landowner who rides his son and daughter unmercifully to "give me gran'sons!" He is surely the Big Poppa of this, as Burl Ives was the Big Daddy of "Cat on a Hot Tin, Roof; and despite his lost lines, slurred or shouted, he dominates the drama. I have never seen Paul Newman so hipped or more sympathetic; and Miss Woodward, the withdrawn sex-starved spinster at first, plays three marvelously touching scenes of pride and hurt as she emerges, in her own words, a human being. The others Miss Remick, Miss Lansbury, Anderson, Franciosa are otherwise memorable, though I could not altogether get the sense behind Welles' forgiveness of the "redeemed" Franciosa. Top credits in the Jerry Wald production go also to Joseph La Shelle, who photographed it, and Alex North, who scored it.
