starting with the project ranJid PhotO New 'Things' Footlight Thriller, Entertains Ffll Tim 1 (Mtldb Invade Earth in Picture Is it a saucer? Is it Sputnik? No, it's just Brian Don levy and supersubversion. It is United Artists' "Enemy From Space" and, incidental ly, despite the title, it's one of the half-dozen or so half-: way decent science fiction films of the season. In black and white, it is screening at the Paramount Downtown, Hawaii, united Artist3 Ingle wood, United Artists Pasa dena, and Capitol theaters. Donlevy, testily heading an all-British cast, is (pre-l sumably) an American rock et scientist working in Eng land who accidentally dis covers that one of H. minor government research groups with a plant in the remote, dank moors has been mada the beachhead for a planetary invasion by the enemy.

Humans Brainwashed tor (Jessel). There is a plot to kill his wife. There is a retired inspector of police living nearby, although, as it turns out, he doesn't solve anything. As a matter of fact, legally, is there anything to solve? Finest Job Elliott does an excellent job as a man of weak will who is caught up in circumstances with which he can't cope. The strength lies in Miss Jessel, who has other problems to cope with besides her faltering lover.

The' two seem ideal for the play. The Blankforts have written a tight drama for the most part. There is a minimum of nonpertinent trimmings, which often clutter up such plays as this. There is a spot of purple dialogue now and then that could just as easily be banished, but all in all it is a tidy job. Deirdre Owen, Julie Bo- SCORES Joanna Woodward triumphs in a very difficult role, in "Three Faces of Eve," screening now at the Fox Wilshire.

His last picture abroad was "The Quiet Man" in which he starred for Director John Ford. And since then he has been in "The Catered Affair" with Bette Davis, Ernest Borgnine and Debbie Reynolds, among his films in the later years. John Kerr contemplates a return to the stage in "The Infernal Machine" by Jean Cocteau which will be presented in New York in January in a translation by Harold Wildman, with probably Jose Quintero direct- ing.

Kerr will have to finish "South Pacific," in which hja seems to be gaining real repute as a singer, before cftmpleting his plans for doing the Cocteau show at the Phoenix Theater. He is anxious to keep a balance between footlight and film efforts. BEATON DRAMATIZES 'ROYAL AST Cecil Beaton, who is reported doing such' glamorous on costumes and sets for "Gigi," will register as a'dramatist with his own autobiographical "My Royal Past," which he is turn- -1 NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (W The suspense play that has no other purpose save to thrill and possibly chill is a rarity on Broadway these years, what with the movies and television having taken over this field, but one finally showed up at the John Golden Theater. "Monique," by Dorothy and Michael Blankfort, is good entertainment of its kind.

Shepard Traube, producer and director who had one of the great hits of this type 15 years ago in "Angel Street." has assembled a fine cast and turned out generally fascinating entertainment. To help the authors there are fine performances by the two stars, Patricia Jessel and Denholm Elliott, and all of the rest are helpful, especially Maureen Hurley and Percy Waram. Based on Novel The Blankforts have based their play on a French novel by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac which already has served as the source for a French motion picture shown here under the title "Diabolique." Those who know say the play is much closer to the novel than was the film. This is one of those cases where not too much of the plot is supposed to be revealed, lest prior knowledge spoil the fun of future viewers. However, it can be said that Fernand Ravinel (Elliott) is thoroughly fed up with his completely disagreeable wife (Hurley) and is in love with a woman doc wortcers ana guaras, are aoie to brainwash humans to doi their work for them.

They achieve a culminating success by regularly inviting membera of Parliament up for "inspection laun-l dering their cerebrums for them and then sending them back to London to happily vote for ever greater subsidies for the coming invasion. The things may be from an asteroid on the dark side of the earth, but they're no fools; they know the value of the bureaucrat. Well, of course, Donlevy, backed up by the excellent British cast John Longden, Brian Forbes, et al. ulti mately saves us all, but not before Director Val Guest has extracted a generous amount of suspense from Nigel Neile's script. Accompanying is a documentary, "Unidentified Flying Objects," previously reviewed.
