This story is undoubtedly false but I rather tike it because it illustrates how thin (he line between melodrama and farce can lie.

example, the hulking nephew Jonathan, a mass murderer, could conceivably have been written as a genuine villain who totes a plastic surgeon along to change his face when the cops get too close. The comic genius came in twisting the story so that the plastic surgeon changes Jonathan's face to look like that of Boris Karloff arid then to hire Karloff to play the part. Stickncy, ftatwirk, Karloff and Randall. Karloff has been playing Jonathan for 22 years now.

He played him on Broadway. He played him in tours. He's played him in stock and summer theater. He journeyed to Alaska and to Puerto Rico to play him. He played him tor four months on Pacific islands during World War II.

He's played him everywhere except in the movies where Raymond Massey played the part in one of those strange casting switches understood only by the moguls of that peculiar business. Karloff will be playing Jonathan on television tonight in Hallmark Hall of Fame's 90-minute production of the classic comedy (Channel 4 at 9:30 in color) with one of those superb casts that only producer-director George Schaefer seems able to assemble Dorothy Stickney and Mildred Natwick as the daffy poisoning Brewster aunts; Tom Bosley as their mad brother who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt; George Voskovec as Dr. Einstein, the plastic surgeon, and Tony Randall as the only sane member of the family the drama critic (as if sanity were possible in such a profession). Oddly enough, Karloff appearance in "Arsenic" will pre-empt Karloff's regular TV chore, Still odder, Jonathan is not Karloff's favorite role "Let's face it, the show belongs to the aunts," he says. Perhaps it seems that way because it began the year with a repeat of it then presented "Victoria Regina" and tonight will do "Arsenic." Then, for Easter, there's another repeat "Give Us Barabbas," the Henry Denker drama that Hallmark did last Easter. At least, the schedule has given Schaefer time to do other things, such as a Broadway play and the recent Alcoa drama, "Hour of the Bath." Karloff is delighted to be doing "Arsenic" under Schaefer's direction. In the production that toured the Pacific fronts in the war, Schaefer not only directed but performed playing Uncle Teddy. "Not only that but he drove the bloody truck." said Karloff. "Which put us on the horns of a dilemma.

Schaefer loved Gilbert and Sullivan and the only way we could keep him awake while he drove was to bellow out Gilbert and Sullivan at the top of our lungs. "Which reminds me of the time we pla'ed Kwaja-lein," the grand old man of monsters added. "The Sea-Bees had asked us to play their end of the island and said they'd build us a stage. They were marvels. They built the stage in a couple of hours and erected the set a Victorian living room.

"And then the most astounding thing happened on that dreary, wasted island. A cat emerged from the kitchen door of the set. He looked around the living room and, bless me, walked calmly out the living room door as if he'd lived there all his. life." if.X 'Jy KERO (10) 7:00 (29) College of Air 7:35 1291 Cartoons 8:00 (101 Magoo 8:15 (2t Capt.
