THURSDAY TELEVISION PROGRAMS Carlson, Marjorie Main. I did this with the special edition of Omnibus that turned up Tuesday night.

I'm rather sorry because while the show had a certain charm it was on the whole a badly organized, rather lightweight exhibition, certainly not in keeping with the usual high standards of the program. It was not a bad show but it was certainly nothing to stay home for. However, it did place on exhibition again rather briefly the wonderful comedy of the team of Elaine and Mike, a duo I found hilarious. At the risk of falling into the same pit again, I want to report that Playhouse 90 tonight, KNXT (2) at 9:30, has the ingredients of a great show. The play is from one of the finest short stories I ever read, Irwin Shaw's "The 80-Yard Run." It was adapted "by David Shaw, the author's brother, and is directed by Franklin Schaffner, one of the giants of this racket.

FURTHERMORE, it stars a pair of the brightest actors currently treading the rather flimsy boards of TV and movies Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. I might add for the gossip minded that this couple are reportedly altar-bound and when I ran Into them at CBS the other day they were posing for wedding pictures for the show. Despite the ingredients, neither Joanne nor Paul is too happy about the play. Said Joanne: "We HOOT MO-! Roy O. Day, Chairman Shaw's remarkable story told in flashbacks the tale of a wife who matured while her husband remained a college boy, remembering his 80-yard run in a football game. "In the script, I don't think she really matures," said Joanne. THIS GAL is quick, intelligent, articulate an incisive person who has made her name as a writer as well as an actress. She can remark gloomily: "I don't have a job after this show and I'm going to Europe." Yet at the moment she's a contender for the Academy Award "Three Faces of Eve," "No Down Payment" and is being bombarded with scripts TV, movies and stage.

"When I started in television, I did anything, everything, mostly bad," she says. "I used to beg to read for parts. Now they throw scripts at me. They want me to do a Tad Mosel script. Imagine! Asking me! I would have begged to do a Mosel a few years ago.

But I'm not going to do it. I'm going to Europe." She said Paul was going, too. Paul said: "No!" He said he was going to do "The Cat." This is -the long-awaited film version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." Paul said: "No Europe. Not with that part waiting." Joanne said: "Pooh! he's going." About the future she said: "You get ahead in this business and you begin lo forget why you started acting in the first place. You take parts because they are big, not because they are good.

Take 'The 80-Yard Run' my part is so big, but there's not a scene in it for me, not a single scene!" But I think they have stretched it too much, padded it. This is always happening in TV you have a good half-hour story so you stretch it to an hour, or a good hour story and you strelch it to 90 minutes. And I think in the stretching, they missed the basic idea." set tonight when Tab Hunter is Pat's guest. They 11 team up for "Put It There, Pal" and "Ain't It the Truth."
