L03ngtUgCfmgS 3 Skowron Co. Blast A's, 5-3 CRONIN'S By NED CORNER CRONIN NEVCOMBE BAGS 100TH; BUMS SPLIT Tony Trabert doesn't look ax If Pancho Gonzales ever laid a glove on him. No contusions, welts, abrasions or cars. Of course Tony may be the type that heals quickly, for it is no secret that Pancho turned him every way but loose when Trabert stepped out of the amateur ranks and joined Jack Kramer's troupe of itinerant ten-nis professionals. I'll say ona thing for him, Tony is a game guy.

Gon-eales beat him so many times on their North American tour that he got to the point where he was jumping over Trabert and shaking hands with the net. Yet Tony is firmly convinced he is going to shellac the big man this week at the Los Angeles Tennis Club in the $7500 Masters' Round Robin tournament being sponsored by Kramer. The business of whacking Gonzales won't exactly get the job done because there are several other racket swingers with the same thought in mind, including Kramer himself, Pancho Segura, Frank Sedgman and Rex Hartwig, All of which means that Trabert has his week's work all cut out for him. WADED IN OVER HIS HEAD Tony waded in over his head when he signed up to do battle with Gonzales. His love for the game went up a couple of hundred points when it turned out that considerable, money was involved.

Amateurism is fine, but a person can't keep his health up eating old tennis balls. Trabert found out that while the dimensions of the court were the same, the game played by the pros was something else again and at the conclusion of the North American tour Pancho had won 74 matches while Tony had bagged but 27. Under the circumstances it is not unreasonable to expect that Trabert would be very happy, indeed, if he never laid eyes on Gonzales again. But, strangely enough, he not only is anxious to resume battle but is firmly convinced he can knock off Pancho for money, marbles or tortillas. TONY ARMED WITH SOME FACTS This is not a case of confidence induced by self-hypnosis.

Tony is armed with some facts that make his convictions sound pretty legitimate. He bases his contentions on (1) the results of their recent South American tour, and (2) the fact that they will be playing out of doors. The clincher, insofar as Trabert is concerned, is the fact that he is going to take dead aim at Gonzales far removed from the confining elements of an indoor pleasure palace. "I'm better outdoors against anyone, but particularly a guy like Gonzales with his big serve. That cannonball delivery of his is tough to handle in an enclosed arena where the lighting is often bad and the background is no help at all in trying to keep your eye, on the ball," said Tony.

"Moving outdoors takes something away from Pancho and at the same time it helps me, so what he loses I gain. The atmosphere also gets into the act. The ball won't go through the air as fast as it does indoors where everything is perfectly still. EASIER TO SEE THE BALL "Outside there invariably is a little breeze, or the air is heavier. Anyhow, a ball won't slice through it like it will inside.

Not only that, but it's easier to see the ball and I have a better chance to get a good piece of it and make a better return. "It's something like an outfielder getting a better jump on a long ball. If the lighting bad and he has to wait until he finds it and is able to pick it up with his eye it often means the difference between a base hit and an out. Getting a quicker start on those line drives off Pancho's racket is going to give me a big boost" Trabert ain't just whistlin' Dixie, because on their South American tour they met nine times. Gonzales won three matches indoors and Tony beat him six times when he lured Pancho out into the open air.

EVERYTHING RIDES ON ONE MATCH "Another thing in this Masters' Tournament is that I'll be meeting Gonzales only once," Trabert went on. "With the pressure and all the marbles' riding on one match I figure I can handle him. What happened on the tour is that before I found out what was going on, Pancho piled up such a big lead that he could relax on the cushion he had built and then get going again when he was ready." i Make no mistake about Trabert having plenty of moxie, all of which he intends to use this week at the Los Angeles Tennis Club. Gonzales may beat him until rigor mortis sets in, but he'll never be able to scare him to death.
