He has lost a leg in one contest, yet he will accept nothing short of a return joust wjth the strange white murderous le viathan. Somehow it is the whole Huston picture rather than build up around this one relentless somber figure of a John Barrymore, when he was in the original "Sea Beast," silent film version, gave more of personal impact to the crippled, vigorously revengeful mariner. The force of Ahab in Huston's produc-i tions grows out of the reac tions of the men who surround him. Fault Cited Probably that serves better for the modern eKl) but it also Moby Dick anvthim. but a Gregory Peck starring picture, even though he heads the cast.

He nevertheless sus tains a fine forceful impression. There is much psychologi cal hammering that goes with the scenes that show him dominating the crew, and this may find a minority opposed to such mechanizing of from a critical standpoint and may to some extent inter fere with the popular reac tion. the performance of Peck himself which conveys this impact of the Ahab character. Huston's conception of characters is extraordinary both pictorially and in their inherent qualities.

He evidences this most strikingly in the instance of Queeque, Elayed by Friederich edebur, with the beaded tattoo on his face, his ordering of his own coffin. Also Exceptional Equally striking is the impression that Orson Wellesi makes in his bearded role as Father Mapple, with his early sermon on the Jonah theme. There is nothing ordinary about the portrayals of such stellar personages as Richard Basehart, who is narrator as Ishmael, and Leo Genn, seen as the rebellious Starbuck, who tries to incite a mutiny. This "Moby Dick" will meet with some criticism be cause of the variability of its appeal, and the mechanical character of his wind-up, with the obviously contrived whale shots.

Kal mil Santa Ant 7r PAULO KIJ-MIl Mk Aaata An 5 BY EDWIN SCHALLEBT 'Moby Dick" provided a multitude of new thrills for its first audience last night at RKO Pantages Theater.

Produced and directed by John Huston, this 1956 ver sion of the Herman Melville classic of the sea has unique attributes of interest. It also has great moments, and is amazingly individual in its pictorial art, various pnases of its drama, and notably in characters. Sometimes the picture's seeming determination to be utterly different, I would say, eroes too far. One feels con scious of effort and striving! to attain a certain result rather than actual fulfillment A mechanical end-effect is thus achieved, which is not unlike the climax, tumultu ous as this may be, when a man-maneuvered giant whale. is seen.

Still, "Moby Dick;" with Huston as its spon- 'sor in this third screen manifestation, is bound to hold great fascination for a large, eager public. Its producer-director has 1 already established his capacity for accomplishing exciting and original film creations and on this occasion he is dealing with a long-acclaimed subject, one that has the remarkable power always associated with the maritime world. Hollywood Intrigued "Moby Dick" thus came to the public here under the most alluring auspices at a gala invitational premiere, which brought out a sensa tional aggregation of stars, directors and other studio personnel, all vastly intrigued by the arrival of this new presentation from one of the industry's most highly acknowledged leaders. i 1 The opening was gala in any number of respects. It reached a social climax not only at the premiere but at an elaborate party which fol lowed at the Mocambo.

1 The red carpet was actual ly rolled out in front of the showhouse to gladden the ar rival of celebrities, while fes tivities prevailed over a wide area along the boulevard. The premiere was thus rated top-notch among events of this kind within the past few years, The picture will begin showing today at the Para mount Downtown and Stanley Warner Wiltern, in ad dition to RKO Pantages. Wants' Return Battle It is Gregory Peck who ap pears as the central person age, Ahab, dedicated to the destruction of the great white whale. He is more than merely a man, but veri tably a symbol of all men who might seem to fight against an inevitable doom This Ahab is violently stubborn at all Jimes in his positive insistence on entering the oceanic battle with a monster of the deep that is more tierce and vengeful tnan any ever known. Through calm and storm he drives on aboard his ship, the Pequod, consecrating ft waiiTwocw tfKTOIT MlVI-HI -sis- south rt ARTffTf I ivm-iN auo now rurmo at nw muowmo Duvi-ms MJtDI ti Krdi TWIN T3t lAITlKtS ftafet IS!
