Port II MAY 30, 1958 lot angctlg CtmK 2 THeTtV SCENE Death-Rattle Ring Chokes Laughter BY CECIL. SMITH More gangsters, more cowboys, more game shows and panels this seems to be the TV prospect for fall according to the announcements that are flooding this desk. And you hear very little about laughter.

The only new comedy show that has been announced (and it's hardly new) is the return of Milton Berle. The Sid Caesar-Imogene Coca fiasco "got the ax last week (and they're off to England to practice their humor on the natives via British TV). There will be less of George Gobel he will do only 12 of his hour shows (but he will be on his own, no Eddie Fisher. Fisher will also do 12 shows on his own). THERE SEEMS TO BE no time for comedy, if I can borrow Behrman's title.

5 CARTOON CAROUSEL With Skipper Frank 7 BANDSTAND 13 SCIENCE LAB 4:30 11 MY LITTLE MARGIE 4 MOVIE Drama ('51 "Tarnished." Dorothy Patrick. Arthur Franz. MOVIE Western 13 BINGO AT HOME in i CJJal of this show on its first go-round (and you were among the minority if you did), you may recall that Gerald is primarily the emcee of the show and it includes animated adventures in other fields, such as the story of Georgie and the wee beastie he finds off the coast of Scotland that grows into a dragon. Georgie and the dragon will be present tonight. OF COURSE, A FEW OF THE OLD masters of comedy will still be riding the air Skelton and Silvers and, probably, Benny.

And the greatest of them all (for my money), Groucho Marx, will be around. If Groucho ever leaves the air, I think that will be the time to toss the TV set out the window. In the last few weeks Groucho has presented some of the funniest episodes of his 11 years on the air. The most hilarious, to me, involved his exchange with Screenwriter Mary McCarthy a week ago. Miss Mc-; Carthy said she had written a book about her mother, a woman who bore 13 children and lived to the age of 82.

Groucho asked if the book was also about her father. Miss McCarthy said absolutely not, that he had nothing to do with it. "Nothing to do with it, huh?" Groucho murmured. He thought for a moment, then asked quietly: "If you take the engine out of your car, how far will it run?" THERE IS IN THE CURRENT HARPER'S a pleasant examination by Leo Rosten of Groucho and the Marxian wit. Rosten quite properly regards Groucho as an intellectual satirist rather than a clown.

"He conducts a merciless, one-man war against bombast, deceit and prudery," says Rosten. "He exudes dis-. enchantment with the state of the nation, the plight of the arts and the sorry record of the human race." Marx, according to Rosten, is the "most incorruptible skeptic alive. And the most deft practitioner of the reductio ad absurdum (T'd horsewhip you if I had a horse'). His wit is pure surrealism; it frees our mind from bondage to the literal."
