NEW STATE CHAMPION Arthur Bpiller decisively won the State championship of California for 1951 last Monday with a brilliant score of SVi-Vt. Most of the six rounds of play took place at the Santa Monica Chess Club where the two State champions of last year met those qualifying in the north and south preliminaries.

Climax of the finals came in the sixth round. Spiller had four wins and Irving Rivise, his nearest competitor, had three points. Rivise had to play to win the sixth-round game from Spiller to have any chance at first place. Against a king pawn opening Spiller headed for his favorite defense, the Sicilian, which Rivise took him right out of with P-QN4. Rivise continually tried for combinative complica.

tions, but Spiller always countered with quiet positional play, until Rivise found himself in extreme hot water on the clock: IS moves made in 1:50. He made the next 22 moves in eight minutes, but came out of it with two pawns down in a lost end game. Spiller pushed through bis advantage to attain the crown. In an adjourned game against Adolph Weiss. Sven Almgren had a chance to tie for second place with Rivise, but failed to find the necessary move to win.

CHESS RENAISSANCE The following- is an editorial that appeared In the New Y.rk Times recently: YOUTH IN CHESS The myth that chess Is primarily game for the old and feeble dies hard, but events of recent weeks should certainly give it the final blow. On -Sunday 17-year-old James T. Sherwin of Columbia University won the New York State chess championship; two weeks earlier 19-year-old Larry Evans of this city emerged as United States chess champion, nosing out even so redoubtable an older though by no means ancient chess master as Samuel Reshevsky. Thus two of the premier chess titles in the country are held by youths still well below voting age. What makes the picture even more striking Is the fact that Evans and Sherwin are by no means the only youngsters making their mark in American chess today.

Such players as Eliot Hearst. Donald Byrnes, Arthur Bisguler and others belong to the same generation and also show the highest promise. What seems to be happening is that this country is having a notable renaissance of both chess interest and chess talent in the rising generation. This is all to the good. And together with the masters of the older generations these new players may yet raise the American standard higher In international competition, challenging the present monopoly of the Soviet Union in world chess championships.

In this area, at least, we can hope for the fiercest Soviet-American competition without raising the specters that accompany such competition in other, less pleasant, fields of International relations.
