Cooper LOgangClCflCimCS4 'house of excels as BY EDWIN SCHALLERT "House of Ricordi" may be called one of the finest mu sical pictures ever made. For the history of the Ricordi publishing firm is virtually the history of Italian opera from the days of Rossini on. So a well-documented production at the Beverly Canon would evidently have us be-lieve, and such unquestionably are the facts in high de- cree. "House of Ricordi" is an interesting chronicle of a family, and an excellent se quence of vignettes pertain ing to illustrious composers. It is full of wonderful song, and much human interest a more imposing event in the same general vein as "Gilbert and Sullivan," seen some months ago.

Luminous Personages Here, though, we deal with such luminous personages of the lyric stage as Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, Puccini, in ad dition to Rossini, with just a fleeting glimpse of Zandonai, (now also of the past), to in dicate that the Ricordi family was always on the lookout for new talent. collaboration between Italian and French interests, "House of Ri- cordi" has been photo graphed richly and fully in color. The most amazing thing is that six writers worked on story and screenplay. I have always thought that was a former prerogative of the American studios. The writing goes mostly for nought, as respect dialogue, which is in the Italian language, but those who followed that speech form i seemed to find amusing commentaries, and certainly for even those who do not know Italian the temperamental eccentricities of some of the people are highly diverting.

Subtitles in English, as usual, convey the broader meanings. The history of Verdi his to bg quit of the opera after Richard Wagner commenced to dominate is one of the most spectacular sequences, and also very meaningful for the Italian art. SCOTT "The Littlest Outlaw a Walt Disney live-action fea ture, is definitely an off-beat production though it is de signed to furnish family en tertainment. Showing at the Fine Arts Theater the picture was produced in Mexico in Technicolor, Rural Mexico is the setting; a Latin-American cast enacts the drama, tells the heartwarming story of a boy and a horse. However, this is not the usual boy-and-horse narrative, since it should appeal as much to adults as children.

The film concerns the at tempts of a small stableboy to save the life of a jumper which has been ordered destroyed by its owner, a following the horse's re fusal to take a jump and a resulting injury to its rider. Not Too Sticky This basic situation is played, out without excessive sentimentality, which often proves a disadvantage to a story of this type. Suspense is built et fectively in the bull ring, where the lad discovers his horse after he has lost it to a gypsy. There are some in these scenes, too, with a matador gored and the boy showing unusual courage by jumping on the horse's back after a picador has been thrown. There may be quarrels with some performances, although the boy, Andres Velasquez.

Tragic Episode Bellini and his tragic death without seeing his beloved Giulia Grisi, because of the jealous intrigue of Luisa Lewis, who later repents, is high ly dramatic. Ho'V Giacomo Puccini came to know a counterpart of the naively charming and pensive Mimi provides a somewhat touching climaxing sequence.

Much color of an older period in the musical art with violently temperamental prima donnas is suggested in the opening episode concerning Rossini and Donizetti. Very interesting are the various feminine personalities in this picture, with Marta Toren as the soulmate of Rossini (Roland Alexadre); Micheline Prelle, the fiery inamorata of Donizetti; Nadia Gray as Giulia Grisi, and her jealous rival, Miriam Bru in scenes with Bellini (Maurice Ronet who is very good); Eliza Cegani as the "wife of Verdi (excellently depicted by Fosco Giachetti) and Danielle Delorme, as a lovely Maria inspiration for Puccini's "La Boheme." The line of Ricordis, whom we meet first during the Napoleonic rule in Lombardy, includes Paolo Stoppa, Enzo Givampietro, Andrea Checci, and one other unnamed. The operatic selections are drawn from "The Barber of Seville, "I Puritani," "L'Eli-sir d'Amore "The Masked Ball," "Othello" "La and others and are well woven into the action. Singers include Mario del Monaco and Gino Mattera, tenors; the noted Tito Gobbi, baritone, heard in Figaro's aria from "The Barber;" Italo Tajo, bass, who has often appeared in opera here; Rena- ta Tebaldi and Nelly Corradi, sopranos. Del Monaco is highly effective in the "Othello" climax.
