SCIIEUER Anthony Mann, according to advance rumblings, has a remarkably good film in "Men in War," which he directed for Security Pictures with Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray starred. It is to be a United Artists release and Mann will produce and direct two more for UA. First is "Passenger to Bali," by Ellis St.

John, from the Broadway play that starred the late Walter Huston and was staged by his son John. Mann will film it entirely aboard freighter in the Mediterranean next spring, with three prominent names to be selected on an international basis. He will follow that with Erskine Caldwell's sensational "God's Little Acre," for which like Elia Kazan and "Baby Doll" he will invade the-Deep South itself. Mann is presently directing "The Tin Star" at Paramount for Producers William Perlberg and George VALU HEEDS CRY, JOINS STEVE COCHRAN Alida Valli, pretty much a stranger to English-language films of recent years, will appear with Steve Cochran in his own production of "II Grido" At the beginning, "Cranks" seems like an amateurish effort. But as the revue picks up pace it takes on more of an adult Broadway revue, in creasingly gains momentum, The girl in the four Is named Annie Ross.

She went to school in Beverly Hills, and New York City for 17 years before she went back to her native England. One American Of the male actors, Hugh Bryant is the only American. Anthony Newly was an English child movie star and Gilbert Vernon was a South African who studied ballet at Sadler's Wells Ballet School in London. So you marvel how four such widely separated young sters over the globe could get together for this unusual musical revue which needs the utmost co-operation and timing in their dancing, singing and pantomime. In a pantomime number called "Gloves," for instance, they play an entrancing, si lent ballet with white gloves on their hands.

In other numbers such as "L'apres Midi de Gilbert" and "Blue" they are very voluble with a quartet of tender, moving voices. GARY COOPER mmSS NOW PLAYING I nam emtrY.P6 RiCHARD EGAN DEBRA PAGET aVIS PRESLEY ROKRT MIDDLETOIf WILLIAM CAMPBELL NEVILLE BRAND Ma Intcf Bmmh NEW-YORK, Nov. 26 UB I Tonight there came into the Bijou Theater on Broadway musical revue called "Cranks," a eleight-of-hand lyrical show with some gim micks. "Cranks" really isn't a mu sical revue In the Broadway sense because there Is no chorus line of fetching beau ties to divert your mind while the principal stars are net changing costumes, and catching their breath to come out and sing a new aria. Four in Cast This revue, which has been brought over from a long run in London by Producers Richard Charlton and John Krimsky, has a cast of only four people.

There are no chorus girls, nobody out on the stage except three boys and a girl. They not only play and sing every number; they also change the scenery and settings. And there is seldom a solo number; usually the four are on and off stage in the 30 numbers of the revue. And sometimes the action hap pens so quickly that the per- Papa Celestin Rarity Caught Papa Celestin's last recordings were made for the Cin erama camera and- stereo phonic sound system. "Tiger Rag" is the climax to the en tire New Orleans jazz sequence in "Cinerama Holiday," and another number, "Darktown Strutters Ball," was recorded.

Here, with' Papa and his music, was a chance for the Cinerama mechanism to show off its talent for "putting the audience in the picture." The three-eyed camera was brought up close to Celestin's cornet, and his expressive face told the story of music. Too, the stereophonic sound system, with its seven microphones, captured the quality of the wild, free, joyous notes. At Warner's Hollywood Theater, Papa Celes tin music comes from the corresponding source of the sound on the screen.
