BY MEL ZIKES Sailboat builders with noses for business have quit looking down those same noses at the people who put outboards together. This was illustrated graphically last week when nationally known builder and racer George D. O'Day opened a plant in Costa Mesa, this in addition to his home yard in Boston. Having a plant on each coast is a new concept for sailboat builders. Putting the plants nearer the markets to save time and cost in shipping is a business fact of life the out-boarders realized several years ago.

Wizard, another member of the Costa Mesa boat-building "family," and Glasspar are among the most notable of the coast-to-coast outboarders. O'Day's boats are built of fiberglass, a product pioneered by the power people, which has proved highly successful in sailboats of late. Production techniques are the same for power and sailboats with the glass, so O'Day is just taking advantage of the know how available in the Southland as he moves his plant into the center of this type of building. 'Perfect Family Boat' Among the O'Day boats being manufactured in Costa Mesa are the 16Vi-ft. Day Sailer, the 15V-ft.

Ospray, the fine Rhodes 19 and the Seven-Eleven Dinghy. Veteran sail-man Bob Woodward, who is a member of the O'Day organization, is quite high on the Day Sailer, calling it "the perfect family boat." You'd hardly put the tag "family boat" on the hydroplane Burt Ross Jr. drove across Seattle's Lake Washington recently. Ross became the second outboard driver to join the "100 m.p.h. Club" as his Mercury-powered hydro was clocked at 115.547 m.p.h.

The Merc power unit was a stock Mark 75H. So, the motor builders' race for recognition continues. It was less than two months ago that Hu Entrop drove an Evinrude at 114.6 m.p.h. on Lake Havasu. Speeds Serve Purpose While no family outboarder would see such speeds, they do serve a purpose.

Speeds like this help leading boat and motor builders produce the most efficient, most dependable and safest outboard boats and motors possible. This Mark 75H, incidentally, is the same type as the much ballyhooed motor which Mercury kept running continually for 68 days. Paramount's Ray Leger is claiming another world record, this one for stock production outboard boats. He was clocked at 69.17 m.p.h. in Long Beach Marine Stadium last week.

He had twin Mercury plants on his Power Cat 1600 runabout. Leger's mark erased the standard set by Jack Ward at Bakersfield in November. Ward drove his Power Cat 1400 boat, which was powered by twin Mercury 58s, at 68.07 m.p.h. the American Power Boat regatta. a predicted log race Sunday The cruise will start at Yacht Harbor on Lake Mead and go to Pierce's Ferry to The nroKram starts at Top-notch invaders such as Frank Zorkan, Dan West, 8:30 a.m.
