Brady had previously been rumored, but is now definite. Taken from a Damon Runyon story, with script by Cy Gomberg, this picture concerns Brady's meeting with a nice girl while he is en route from New York to Florida when he is getting away from the mob. Harmon Jones is now set to direct the picture. Jones directed "The Spirit of St. Louis," the story of Dizzy Dean, for Producer Jules Schermer at 20th.

De Mille brings the circus to the screen in Greatest Show on Earth," a picture to be reckoned as one of the greatest of this master showman's shows. It opened yesterday at the Orpheum and Warner's Beverly Theaters, where it is undoubtedly due to have a long run. De Mille provides the maximum of entertainment in his production, not to speak of glamour, and above all the spirit that forever lurks under the big top. Even De Mille dissenters and there are always bound to be a number among the supercritical will unquestionably be fas cinated by this example of his peculiar picture-making genius. He has all the latitude necessary in the subject itself for gorgeous and tinseled display.

He succeeds by the very nature of things in giving what happens great authenticity. Moreover he tells a human narrative, that has both appealing and thrilling climaxes. De Mille Narrator De Mille himself is the narra tor of the picture behind the scenes. His booming voice launches the film on the way with a vivid word impression of what the circus means. He is heard now and again punching over the bigger panorama of the story, so picturesquely shown on the screen with all the facilities made available by the Ringling Bailey Circus.

Starting in lorida winter quarters to introduce prepara tions for the season, and with the various characters appearing, "The Greatest Show on Earth" becomes in the big De Mille way not only a colorful story of various central characters, but above all a saga of the whole troupe and the crowd. Reactions of the public are wonderfully balanced against the performances in the circus rings. There is movement, life and action, both intimate and vast, throughout the film, right up to the final climax of the sensational railroad wreck. Wylie and directed by Jean Negulesco. It opened yesterday at Los An ffeles. Chinese. Uptown and Loyola Theaters. "Will John return to his the time-honored question of the daytime radio, and now TV, pro grams, is posed in "Phone Call From a Stranger." The answer comes after a series of storybook situations that are put together in slick fashion, excepting one that misfires.

Here's the format for Mr. Johnson's efficiently contrived opus: Too Legitimate Gary Merrill, a high-grade gentleman who eventually becomes a Pollyanna, abandons his wife (Helen Westcott) and two daughters in the middle of the night because he can't forgive his spouse's one mistake. He meets three strangers at the airport and, for purposes of the script, they all board the same westbound plane. The plane makes an unscheduled landing because of bad weather and Mr. Merrill becomes the father confessor of the trio, each of whom has a particular domestic problem.

Eventually the plane is wrecked for good and we learn, after a brief lapse in continuity, that Merrill is going toicall the wives or husbands of his three "friends," who have been killed in the crash. He finds a problem at each house he visits, adds to his knowledge of human behavior, and the sum total convinces him he should practice what he preaches. Ill-Fated Trio The three ill-fated persons of the plane sequence are Michael Rennie, a doctor who is running away from his conscience-after a drunk -while- driving accident; Shelley Winters, an unsuccessful actress going home to try to claim her husband from a sel fish mother-in-law, and Keenan Wynn, a noisy, joke -playing traveling salesman who brags about his glamour-girl wife. Among those Merrill counsels are Ted Donaldson and Beatrice Straight as the son and wife of the doctor: Evelyn Varden as the mother-in-law, and Bette Davis, crippled (no glamour girl) wife of Wynn. Miss Davis actually counsels HIM in the last se quence and this persuades him to return home.

Whether you feel "Phone Call From a Stranger" is unreal or not, the picture has some tense, intriguing scenes and is very well acted from start to finish. The second feature showing is "The Dark Man," with Edward Underdown. BOTH THEATRES NOW Vv PLAYING! Cecil B. Morris, with whom Miss Albright previously worked in "Sierra Passage," is already in Alaska with Director Ewing Scott. He is coproducer of the picture with Lindsley Parsons. PAIGE, COOPER HINTED FOR PLAY ADAPTATION It could be that Jackie Cooper and Janis Paige will be returning to Hollywood to star in "Remains to Be Seen," because I understand that Arthur Hornblow, producer of the picture, will go east to survey the cast of that play with a view to seeing whether any of the players therein are right for the film version being written by Sidney Sheldon.

Three simultaneous openings are scheduled in London for "A Streetcar Named Desire" next Friday, though without festivities owing to the death of King George. The voice of Vivien Leigh, however, may be heard from New York. Art Gilmore is doing the narration for a Technicolor short produced under the supervision of Gordon Hollingshead at Warners titled "Unfamiliar Sports," which shows camel racing in North Africa, caber tossing by Scotsmen and the Swiss type of wrestling among other things. Harry Brown will script "All the Brothers Were Valiant." which will star Robert Taylor and Stewart Granger when it is produced at Metro. Frank Lovejoy because of "Retreat, Hell!" receives an accolade from the Women Marines here as their ideal Marine colonel.

Capt. Elva Chaffer and Tech. Sgt. Mary Fiedler visited Lovejoy at Warner studio to advise him of his selection. Danny Chang, who has been getting much attention in "Hong Kong," will have a part to portray in "Seven Sisters From Seattle," the Pine-Thomas feature, as an Eskimo boy.

The producers were impressed with the reactions to his work in the film now being shown in other sections of the country and had the role written in for him in the new film.
