UM BY JOHN Ia SCOTT The U.S. Cavalry and the Sioux Indians fight it out again on the Paramount Theater screens in "Warpath" in Technicolor, and two husky soldiers settle their personal grudge in-between the larger and more sanguine battles. That's a familiar formula for movies of this type and one which Writer Frank Gruber, an expert on things western, can toss over his shoulder, or typewriter, with ease. Gruber does regenerate the chief villain by allowing him to give his life to save his fellow cavalrymen, instead of having the hero polish him off. We are spared the bloody last stand of Gen.

Custer in "Warpath," (which has been recreated often on the screen of late) since this story concerns a company of the 7th Cavalry that is diverted from the general's ill-fated mission. Vengeance-Bound Edmond O'Brien, an ex-captain in the Union Army, and bent on vengeance for the shooting of his sweetheart by bandits who, he learns, have joined the cavalry, lands in the 7th as a private. He and a sergeant (Forrest Tucker) start a feud almost immediately, and, by the long arm of coincidence, O'Brien discovers Tucker is one of the men he seeks. That keeps the pot boiling be tween battles with the Indians. There's a girl (Polly Bergen) and her father involved, too.

Gene Autry Sets Plan for Biography; Douglas Gets Leave for Festival BY' EDWIN' SCHAIXERT -Gene Autry will produce his own life story independently for Columbia, it was announced yesterday by Gene Autry Productions, Inc. The picture will also importantly concern his discovery' by Will Rogers. This will he the second picture involving a quest for a Rogers type, as Warners plans the story of Rogers himself.

Autry will leave next week to fill an engagement at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, and after that will return to make 'The Old West" for Columbia. After that his rodeo will play Boston and then after a tour he will return to make his biographical film. Packed with swashbuckling swordplay and poetic romance, the production is being shown on a "continuous performance schedule. March of Time's "Morocco Outpost" and Disney's Donald Duck color cartoon, "Bee at the Beach," augment the program.

El Teatro Beckons Wilton Graff, who has been busy at the Laguna Summer Theater, leaves today for Santa Fe, N.M., where he will star in the play, "For Love or Money." poser, Anton von Webern, is completely in the 12-tone style invented by Schoenberg one could not determine at first hearing, but it is easily one of the most sincere and most expressive works of this composer that has been heard here. One Defect It sustains and establishes a mood with notable economy of means and with unerring consistency of style; the only im portant defect that one found was that it could not make up its mind when it had said its say. Following the intermission Mr. Mitropoulos came up with the Cesar Franck Symphony in an interpretation that was as strongly individual as have been those of other classics he has elected to perform during his tenure of office at the Bowl. It was not the conventional Franck by any standard measurement of tempos or of structural outlines.

But it was always vivid: it flared with enough emotion for Tschaikowsky, and it so excited a grateful audience that there were cheers and a long proces sion of recalls at the close. GR-4522 Douglas-Bennett, Guy Who Came Back; Carfield-Winters. He Ran All the Way BY ALBERT GOLDBERG Richard Tucker, Metropolitan Opera tenor, was the soloist at the second concert conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos in Hollywood Bowl last night, and an audience that one would guess to number between 6000 and 7000 listeners was reluctant to let him depart even after he had sung three encores.

Faced with the necessity of having to sing in the cavernous expanse of the Bowl without the aid of a microphone, Mr. Tucker at once demonstrated what a sagacious vocalist he is. Instead of forcing his voice, as a singer less experienced and less expert might have done, he concentrated on the lightest and freest possible production of tone. The result was that his voice carried perfectly; every nuance registered as it was intended to do, and there were ample power and volume for all purposes. Restraint Effective Mr.

Tucker's bel canto style was admirably adapted to Paradiso" from Meyerbeer's "L'Africana," which he sang first. It may have lacked something of the ecstatic note, but such limpidity of tone and smoothness of phrasing are not encountered often. Perhaps because he reckoned with the danger of forcing his voice, the big aria from Halevey's "La Juive" also misse'd the utmost in dramatic projection, but it was sung warmly and with an intensity of feeling that was not less effective because of its restraint. The audience was moved to cheers by Mr. Tucker's singing, and by way of reward got Leon cavallo's "Matmata, Rossini's "La Danza" and something called "For You Alone," by somebody.

Get Together By last night Mr. Mitropoulos and the Los Angeles Philhar monic Orchestra had arrived at much better understanding than at the conductor's opening concert. The players appeared to have solved the enigma of his beat and all mechanical mat ters functioned with much more certainty than they had before, with inevitable improvement in details of tone and phrasing. There was a fine organlike richness to the ensemble in the' opening Prelude and Allegro by Coupenn, which Milhaud has ar in "Return of the with Dale Robertson. Producer' Frank P.
