EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT 50e Kldl Frw with a aarant HS sWFERNANDELfSS'r 313 rim WILD OAT" fevyfcn BY EDWIN SCHALLERT "Toward- the Unknown" will readily be recognized as good start for William Holden's independent picture- making program. It is a Toluca feature, released by Warner produced and directed by Mervyn LeRoy. It is a high-flying adventure affair, with a rather substan tial plot about a hero, handi capped with a record of hav ing been brainwashed in Korea. The picture is screening at the Downtown Paramount, Vogue, Stanley-Warner Wil tern, Picwood, Crown in Pasa dena and eight Pacific drive- ins.

"A Cry in the Night," made by Alan Ladd's Jaguar organization, with Edmond O'Brien, Brian Donlevy and Natalie Wood as stars, is the rather important secondary attraction. The great ambition of Holden to restore himself to a place in the service as an Air Force test pilot is the main propelling jrce in "Toward the Unknown." His problem is that he not only has to fight off the weakness to which he succumbed while a prisoner of the Communists in Asia, but particularly, he has to live down a bad reputation. Of great help to Holden in his perplexed situation is Virginia Leith, his former, ro mance, now secretary to the STARTS SHOWTIME 6:30 P.M. "FASTEST GUN ALIVE" "SATELLITE IN THE SKY" 1.,... Nolan play a this brigadier general role.

This general is determined to do most of the difficult test- flying himself, even though he is deemed beyond the right age tor such treacherous work. While he is highly con siderate or Holden and his fight to make good again, he is also a romantic rival. Due to that, there are some mild plot complexities. How ever, primarily "Toward the Unknown" is concerned with the' technique of flying- new jet and rocket craft. It builds its best suspense out of these technical elements and the question of Holden's proving himself.

What may most emphatically be said about the picture is that it seems to manifest a highly authentic quality, and to have special distinction on that account as one of the numerous modern-day air experimentation films. Cast Effective Holden, Miss Leith, who is a sympathetic type, and competent Lloyd Nolan all regis ter well in their portrayals, with Charles coming to the fore as one of the co- stars. Impact of tragedy is well conveyed by Karen Steele after her husband (James Garner) is killed in an air catastrophe. Murray Hamil 9 In yw" IEC.M0K Ul la JkiP EVES. Unci.

not only wrote the script, but was as sociate producer, and Hal Rosson merits much credit as the cameraman. 1 In "A Cry in the much of the excitenent arises from scenes between Nata-' lie Wood and Raymond Burr, who does an exceptional portrayal of the psychopathic type who has a sort of child complex. O'Brien as a police officer is under much tension because his. daughter is being held prisoner by the neurotic villain. Richard Anderson has a good chance to register aa the fiance of the girl, while Carol Veazie as the mother of Burr, Irene Hervey and various others figure prominently in the action, with Donlevy good as a well-balanced law enforcer.

Says he, "If I win the $64,000 it will bankrupt me taxwise." Hope the story in a national magazine by Ingrid Bergman will end this campaign of vilification against her. Pictures with the article were taken by Yul Brynner. He says since his name is under the photographs instead of above them this gives him the shortest billing he's ever had, "but for Ingrid I was delighted to do it." I enjoyed Metro's "Teahouse of the August Moon" very much, but must confess not as much as I liked the play. Marlon Brando attempted to speak with a Japanese accent which isn't easily understood. Glenn Ford's performance was magnificent: he stole the picture.

The exquisite Japanese actress who played opposite him was one of the loveliest things I've ever beheld. GOOD NEWS Russ Tamblyn hasn't been getting the roles he deserves at Metro, but I'm happy to learn he gets a star part in "Young Lovers" for Bryna Productions. Dori3 Day's arrival in her home town for the premiere of "Julie" was saddened by the death of her beloved voice teacher Grace Renie. She also taught Jane Froman and the Mills Brothers. Claudette Colbert and husband have moved to Talm Springs while their Holmby Hills house is being transferred from one site to another on her acreage.

She thought they'd be able to live in the house while it was being moved but learned it would be impossible. Itetrued by rhlrer Trlbunf-N T.
