The mayhem will start at 2:30, following a noon preliminary between the Trojan Jayvees and Camp Lockett. Even the infinitesimal chance that this game might produce the upsettingest of all upsets vanished yesterday with the dual announcements that most of S.C.'s injured regulars will be available if needed and that two Tiger starters, Center Jack Woodyard and Halfback Bill Mahlstead, are definitely out because of Jiurts, thereby shrinking the C.O.P. squad to 18. AirdeTlls Collect The Airdevils counted first, Johnson shagging over from the 10-yard line in the opening period with shirttail flying after his 29-yard punt return and a 15-yard swing by Albert had set up the pins. U.C.iIa. roared back to count shortly after the second act began, a 25-yard pass play involving Ernie Case and Skip Rowland climaxing a swift 38-yard sortie. Both clubs missed their conversions, so the reckoning was tied and thus it remained until the first play of the final quarter. At that juncture, Brother Harrington broke through from 10 yards out and carried a couple of would-be tacklers over the goal line with him, thereby turning a 76-yard drive into six precious points.

DeLauer Converts Bob DeLauer converted this time and that was that, Preflight reached the U.C.L.A. 2-yard line and also the 10 on other thrusts, while the West-wooders twiced navigated to the Airdevil 8, only to be repulsed. Early in the evening, the embryonic naval flyers discovered leaks in the Uclan's left side and stabbed there repeatedly. And Albert's ptsky passes he completed 6 of 10 for 77 yards forced the collegians to keep their defense pretty well spread. It might have been worse, save for the desperate defensive play of Southpaw Quarterback Case, who couldn't quite match Southpaw Quarterback Albert's offensive finesse but who came up with stop after stop as a secondary guardian.

That's the way they look to me in the $75,000 Gold Cup this afternoon but, at the same time, the race is wide open and these top four figure so close together that racing luck may decide the issue. Bull Reigh has all the attributes of a winner. He has enough speed to avoid early trouble and get a position. He has never wilted under weight. He has class, holding a world record at a mile and one sixteenth.

He has a stakes winning pilot in Johnny Longden. He can stand a drive in the stretch. He has proven his current fitness at this meeting, and is as "fit as human hands can make him. He may be beaten, but he won't be far away at the wire. Paperboy Game Paperboy is as game as they come and is nicely rigged at 122 pounds.

He has never been far away at the wire, and has a fast stablemate, Stronghold, pitched in at 105 pounds to try and kill off the pace of Sirde. I rate him an equal favorite with Bull Reigh. Johnny Adams in the saddle insures a cool ride. Sirde is the big question mark of the race. He may go to the post a public favorite.

He has intense early speed, and certainly can travel this far. It is just a question with me if he will stand a sustained drive in the early part for the pace. He did not in Chicago, but all hands admit that he is a much better horse now than in Chicago, and he is in at 111 pounds, a neat weight concession. Sirde easily could stay. This may be the day he offers the proof, but as yet he hasn't.

Figures Close Man o' Glory, the California-bred, is rated but a few points away. He has all the earmarks of a cup horse, and can run all day. He will be flying at the finish. Most others have a chance. Georgie Drum is a stakes winner and has trained extra well.

Texas Sandman, if he could return to early season form, would be the horse to beat. War Valor, at the weights, certainly must be rated a fighting chance. Richmond stablemate of Sirde, has shown good promise and could still improve here. Challenge Me qualified nicely in a seven furlonger. Sickles Choice is in fairly light, has a strong rider, and is game in the run to the wire.

Best Effort is a good horse, but so far has not run to true expectations. Whirlabout has a tough job cut out for her. Shuffle has not been himself at late, but his best race could surprise one and all. Stronghold is in to kill others and himself off and may weaken at the final quarter. rack up a 28-to-12 victory' over a rugged West Virginia eleven tonight before 19,000 fans at Temple Stadium.

Is the dope horse downs and converted four points Redondo Upset by Inglewood Redondo's four year win string which stretched through 24 consecutive triumphs was broken last night when they dropped a thrilling 22-to-19 decision to Inglewood in a Bay League opener. The game was played on the losers' field. The losing Redondos started off in regular fashion and at half time they had rolled up a convincing 19-to-6 lead and it appeared just like another one of those things.

But the jitters caught up with them in the final periods, which saw them fumble seven times at the wrong moments. The upset was clinched in the final two minutes when Ingle-wood's left halfback Harry Al-leccia plunged through for 7 yards for the winning counter. after two straight wins in which he ran away and hid from his field in time that equaled the track record for a mile and one- after touchdowns as Temple rallied from a 6-0 deficit to clinch its fourth successive win and maintain an unbeaten and untied record for 1945. Burns carried the ball 10 times for a net gain of 101 yards in addition to directing Temple's T-formation attack. BY JOHN DE LA VEGA When two brilliant gridiron offenses clash the team that can muster the best defense should win, which is exactly what happened yesterday when Coach Harry Edelson's flashy Fremont squad turned back the invading Jefferson Democrats, 26-12, in a Southern League opener.

Both clubs dsplayed a scintillating attack but the visitors clicked only spasmodically while the Pathfinders put together sustained drives of 58, 63 and 65 yards for touchdowns and Halfback Bob Graves added the clincher in the closing minutes with a 52-yard gallop. The first time Fremont got the ball they marched 58 yards to score, Quarterback Tom Henderson passing to End John Albini 24 yards for the pay-off. Graves plunged for the extra point. sixteenth 1:42 2-5on each oc casion. Has improved greatly over form he displayed at Santa West Anita and Chicago under training of Carl (Slim) Roles.

One of horse's best supporters is the man who bred and raced Sirde L.E. On the first play after the kick-off Fullback Bob Boswell, a 190-pounder, rammed over center, ran past the secondary before they realized it and raced 67 3'ards to pay dirt. The kick was short, however, and it was Fremont, 7-6. Just before half time Fremont advanced 65 yards in 12 plays to score, Henderson connecting with his sixth straight pass, a 5-yarder, to Albini, in the end zone. He passed to the other end, Jack Pulliam, to make it 14-6.

After recovering a fumble on their own 35 at the outset of the third canto, Fremont slashed 65 yards to tally in 11 plays. Fullback Vic Marasco bulled his way across from the 17. Trailing 20-6, the dangerous Democrat backs kept trying and midway of the fourth stanza they clicked. Elmer Douglas, 125-pound quarterback, returned a punt 16 yards to the Fremont 29. Sub Halfback Bob.Ursury made 7 and then Theophilus Benton flashed 22 yards to score.

Jefferson was on the march again in the closing minutes but an intercepted pass gave Fremont the ball on the Pathfinder 48 and on the first play Graves streaked around end to score easily. under his own colors until last spring, when he sold the horse Temple Hewson Waltzer Pifcitella Hochheiser Virshup Dolin Robert! Two of the field are doubtful starters Shuffle and Whirlabout, Shuffle has run badly since he was second to Texas Sandman in the Argonaut Mile, and Whirlabout's name was put through the entry box with a' prayer for rain attached to it. Ross says Johnny Longden rides Bull Reigh regardless of-whether Whirlabout goes, but up to date the Louis B. Mayer sta-ble has always had first call on old "Moneybags" as a pilot.
