STANNARD Writer CITY WILL VOTE TODAY ON MAYOR AND COUNCIL Continued from First Page cent of the vote cast, with Clifford Clinton and Supervisor Roger Jessup running close together in second and third places. Council Post Fights The mayoralty contest isn't providing all the voter interest, however. In four Councilmanic districts the incumbents are not seeking re-election and a swarm of political hopefuls are out to get the vacated jobs, which are for twoyears terms. These districts are the 4th, 5th, 12th and 13th Councilmanic districts. Another element which is going to bring many voters out is that the election of Councilmen at the primary is assured in several districts.

This in the 13th, where only two candidates filed for the unexpired term, and also in the 10th, 14th and 15th, where only two candidates for Councilman appear. In several other districts, although there are more than two candidates, the strength of the leaders indicates that one of them might get a majority of votes cast and thus be elected. Interest Elsewhere Lags The fight for the four offices on the Board of Educationthree four and one twoyear terms-is also intense this year. Several disgruntled leftwing groups are seeking to dis. place Roy, J.

Becker, J. Paul Ellitt and Maynard J. Toll, the practical, common-sense incumbents, and substitute a slate committed to meddling with ine son A Los Angeles Cimes Part 1-TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 1945 Close Council Races to Swell Vote Total Today BY THE WATCHMAN The four Councilmanic districts where incumbents are not running for re-election have developed into hot contests which are expected materially to increase the vote for today's election. The four districts are the 4th, 5th, 12th and 13th. One of the hottest Councilmanic fights is in the 13th District.

In that political subdivision an intensive house-to-house canvass is under way in behalf of Meade McClanahan, heating equipment manufacturer, who is indorsed by many civic and business groups. Joining in McClanahan's indorsement is the Railroad Men's Nonpartisan League. "We ask all railroad men to vote for Meade McClanahan and be sure of a man who will give us a fair and just deal," Matthew C. Latimer, secretary of the league, explains. Force for Good--Pointing to the importance of the public schools in molding the minds of the nation's future leaders, Mrs.

Eleanor B. Allen of Westwood, a candidate for the Board of Education, said: "I believe that education is the greatest single force for good in the world today. As we educate tomorrow's citizens, so goes the destiny of America. Hitler knew and used this maxim to the utmost. For 20 years he changed the hearts of youth and put ideas in their heads before he ever put a gun in their hands.

And what have today? A fanatical generation fighting teoNe naciously in the face of ultimate defeat. Our troubles will not end with the 'cease firing' we are going to need an army of re-education as well as an army of occupation. Just so in America, we must awaken to the fact that we have taken for granted our American way of life." Contest Close--Another close Councilmanic contest is in the Sixth District. The Citizens' Committee, sponsoring the reelection of Councilman Earl C. Gay, announced that the Southern Retail Druggists' Association, and the Southern California Retail Grocers' Association indorsed Gay for re-election.

"These indorsements coming after a series of previous recommendations, and the withdrawal of Harold Read from the race in favor of Gay, point to a definite trend success at the polls." "according to Mrs. Isabel Nelson, chairman of the Citizens Committee. Picked as Winner Also running against a field of seven opponents, Harold A. Henry is picked as a winner in the Fourth 'District. Henry, secretary of the Wilshire Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the City Playground and Recreation Commission, has the advantage of being well known in the community in which he is running.

A veterans' committee, comprising 11 Past Commanders of the Wilshire Post of the American Legion, is indorsing him. Election Predicted In the Fifth District, supporters of George P. Cronk, an insurance man, are predicting his election at the primary, although he is opposed by seven rival candidates. Cronk has made an unusually aggressive campaign, speaking at as many as five political gatherings daily. He is indorsed by many of the business leaders and civic groups of his district.

In Free-for-All Richard L. Newton, The Times' recommended Councilmanic candidate in the 12th District, has eight rivals in that free-for-all. An aggressive candidate Newton is expected to poll a good vote despite opposition by radical groups. State Rates High in Paper Drive Urging intensification of all salvage operations, a War Production Board report released yesterday stated that California, with only per cent of the population, collected 10 per cent of the nation's wastepaper during. 1944.

The report was released here by Zack Farmer, chief of the W.P.B.'s salvage division for Southern California, who disclosed that Los Angeles and Southern California shouldered a substantial part of the load in helping California establish its high mark last year. Collections included not only wastepaper, but tin cans, household fats, iron and steel scrap and rags, which, according to Farmer, all are high on the essential salvage list for 1945. Conchies Sentenced GRAND RAPIDS (Mich.) April 2. (AP) -Seven conscientious objectors, deserters from a civilian service camp at Germfask, indicted by a Federal grand jury in March and who later pleaded nolo contendere, were sentenced today by Judge Fred M. Raymond to serve three years and six months in prison, They include George Kiyosho Yamada, 26, American-born Japanese, San Francisco.

87 Teachers Plan to Quit This Year Los Angeles city schools will lose 83 teachers and four principals by retirement at the end of the school year, Supt. Vierling Kersey yesterday told the Board of Education, still facing the continuous wartime problem of obtaining sufficiently trained personnel for the school system. The four principals are Robert J. Interest in the Board of Education race is heightened, also, by the strong race being made by Mrs. Eleanor B. Allen Westwood to outstrip 19 opponents and win the fourth job on the school ticket, a place made vacant by Dr. Clarence Pierce, who is not a candidate for re-election. Mrs.

The other offices at stake admittedly contribute but little interest to the election. City Controller Dan O. Hoye is unopposed, City Atty.

Ray Chesebro has only one opponent. In only five of the 12 Municipal judge offices are there contests. In the five contested offices, too, the incumbents appear to have overwhelming strength and the reelection of each at the primary is predicted. Proposition A Important If the office contests are not sufficiently exciting to attract voters to the polls, they should consider lending their help to assure the passage of Proposition A on the ballot, which will provide $10,000,000 toward a new sewage treatment plant and end contamination of the city's beaches. This proposition must have a two-thirds affirmative vote to pass and its failure might seriously retard the predicted rapid postwar industrial and residential growth, of Los Angeles.
