TUESDAY MORNING. APRIL 19, I. VANISHING STEED JUST HORSEPLAY TO BLACKSTONE American Artist Will "Marco Polo" Screen Plays and Other Appraised 1 10LLYW0.0 BY RICHARD GRIFFITH a rebuff to those of us who Happy days are here again for twenty years I've been looking, for th6 picture without a flaw. "Test rjlot" la that the Auto Tire" and the ''Vanish Ing Canary." Noted French Player Appears Edwige Feucrlllc, who por trays Lucrczla In the French film, "Lucrezia Borgia," now in its second week at the Grand Theater, Is considered one of the foremost actresses In France. The youthful star is reported to have scored a wide success In tho starring role of "Topaze," picture.

Here you have Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy competing with the most beautiful, terrifying, useful, monstrous machines the human mind ever conceived or built. That's competition. No one acts. The humans are 3 real as the monsters they dominate. There isn't a false note in the whole picture.

Even those with only a line or two mean it. Wish I had space for all their names. All True Thousands of words have been ten about Spencer Tracy's acting. it's good. But let me tell you he II Scheduled to Arrive Starring Loretta Young, an lnv portant Twentieth Century-Fox studio production will be pre viewed tonight at Grauman's Chinese Theater.

In addition to the preview, "Rebecca of Sunny brook Farm," starring Shirley Temple, will be shown. Beginning tomorrow 'at both Loew's State and the Chinese, Metro-Goldwyn-Maycr's gripping story of commercial aviation, "Test Pilot," will head the new program. Five commercial airports and two army fields were utilized as location scenes in the making of the production. And since the army and commercial fields oper ate on strict scneduies, it was necessary for the film crew to work In "off hours" and around the regular routine of the fields. Starring Clark Cable, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy and Lionel Barrymore, "Test Pilot" deals with the exploits of a breakneck airplane pilot in his barnstorming career from coast to coast The film was directed by Victor Fleming from an original story Dy rranK wead.

Trip to Paris," latest of the Jones Family series, will be the companion picture on the pro gram. B.A. to P.A. Rayemon Robin, Chicago ac tress now appearing in Para- mount's "Prison Farm," holds a bachelor of arts degree from Northwestern Universitv and tp cently was a press agent in Chi cago. nan "Test Pilot mam nothing away from Clark Gable or Myrna Loy and I can think of nothing Better to write than that t0R tffAAHSl HO believe in Mr.

Goldwyn's taste. Fictional history fares better In -The Return of the Scarlet which comes into the Rlvoli as Alexander Korda's fourth successful picture In three Broadway weeks. Smooth, trivial, unpretentious, its rendition of the French Revolution gets closer to conviction than the Goldwynized China of "Marco Polo." For one thing, Its incidents are so extravagant that there Is no question of how they are to be received. They ask acceptance, not analysis. PARALLEL SEEN Too, the Pimpernel's crusade against Robespierre's reign of terror finds a contemporary parallel in the struggle against European dictatorships.

So there is point to the picture. And reviewers, ordinarily wary of sequels, commend the vitality of tnis foiiow-up of Leslie Howard's successful vehicle of several years ago. mey like young Barry Barnes in the Howard role, and praise Mr. Korda and his staff for their shrewdness in relating a costume melodrama to today's news. If a wife helps her husband in business, will he think she is competing him? That is the question asked by i Kay Francis's "Women Are Like That," and reviewers are still searching for the answer.

Earnestly, endlessly, the pic ture documents its problem of wounded masculine vanity, of the enmity rising between husband and wife when both engage in the same occupation. But beyond a vaguely anti-feminist conclusion, it has nothing to say and is wearisomely redundant in saying it. She Is a typical American girl with a story which might have been written by Horatio Alger. Growing up in a little town in Middle Ohio, a pretty blonde with a voice and a sense of rhythm and no very serious idea of a career, she was encouraged by an astute high school music and drama teacher- School operettas and plays were a happy part of her studies. FASCINATED BY MUSIC She went to work as a clerk and "soon drifted to the record department where shestayed a year and a half because the music fascinated her and she imag ined herself singing the grand arias some day. It has all come true. Now she Is at the Metropolitan.

The story of her five years at Curtis Institute of Music, of her work with Queena Mario, of her summer earnings In a vocal quintet traveling from one little town to another learning about America and its audiences is all history now. She married a New York flutist, has a lovely child of 5, is a success in pictures as well as concert and opera. NO CHANGE SEEN The best part of this is that she hasn't changed. She is still the girl from Akron, O. Seven prominent businessmen on their way to Los Angeles who were marooned with her in a snowstorm on the Kansas prairies will testify it During the twen ty hours when they were definite ly stalled in the dust bowl, Miss Jepson led the group singing songs, writing comical verse and inventing games in the club car.

No one pans the picture; it isn't considered that important. Reviewers are merely tolerant of this synthetic presentation of the life and times of a legendary figure, screened by Mr. Goldwyn with pomp and circumstance but without any of the sense of high adventure associated with the first European to penetrate the domain of Kublal Khan, ruler of the mightiest empire the world has ever seen.

SLICK MELODRAMA This might have been a great picture, a rich tapestry of the teeming life of thirteenth-century Asia. Instead the veteran producer has chosen to give us slick melodrama about a young man who rescues a princess and saves Kublai's throne from the intrigues of his sinister minister. As orientals, George Barbier, Basil Rathbone, Alan Hale and Binnie Barnes are merely our familiar Hollywood friends, only their costumes suggesting the barbaric splendor of the great Khan's court The newcomer, Sigrid Curie, is photographically Chinese and responsive to the mood of her role, but she, too, is presented conventionally. ONE HUMAN FIGURE Marco himself is the only human" figure in a gallery of caricatures. Miraculously, Nordic Gary Cooper endows him with the quick Venetian wit md charm which made him a truly glamorous figure, worthy of the myths which cluster about his name.

His is a matchless performance, but by himself Mr. Cooper cannot give this facile picture conviction. It stands as a cold monument to the trick department, a wasted opportun- "ALWAYS THE BEST IN FOODS" A Full Frenehj Lunch, 40e Seethe, 60. Family Affair Dinner. tOc: Booth, 6S0.
