If the Academy ever decides to award an Oscar for pure versatility in acting, the young star should win in a walk. He's a phenomenon. Rooney dominates "Killer McCoy," which would be just another entry in the current cycle of behind-the-scene fight films without him, even with fine supporting performances by James Dunn, Brian Donlevy, Ann Blyth, Sam Levene and others taken into consideration.

As in other recent productions, "Killer McCoy." which opened yesterday Fox Wilshire, Los Angeles and Egyptian theaters, treats of the seamy side of prizefighting, namely "the big-money gambling which accompanies this sport. Racket Discovered When McCoy reaches the "big time" after a series of quick knockouts on tour, he finds that his drunken father (James Dunn.) ex-vaudeville dancer, has sold his contract to Jim Caighn (Donlevy.) a powerful gambler. The latter keeps this connection a secret, bets heavily on McCoy, whom the sports writers say is a fighter with a left hand only, and wins when the "Killer" always BY ALBERT GOLDBERG If we were a musical sheriff we would take all singing students and a good many who consider themselves beyond the student stage by the ear and plant them in the front row of a recital by Jennie Tourel. They might not learn the things they ought to learn even then singers are like that but there could be no better example of the widely art of giving a song recital. Miss Tourel's appearance in Philharmonic Auditorium last night was notable for a variety of reasons.

It started precisely on the dot and we observed no rioting by latecomers. It gave the hackneyed repertoire of the average singer a wide berth, yet it was of unflagging interest. It was in five languages possibly six, our ear not being certain enough to detect the difference between Spanish and Portuguese but it did not degenerate into gibberish: and the printed program tactfully assisted the listener through this linguistic carnival by summarizing the texts. And last but not least, this recital was an exhibition of vocal and musical versatility that could hardly be equaled, let alone excelled, by any other singer before public today. Artfully Blended Miss Tourel's voice, observed objectively, may not be the greatest mezzo-soprano in the world, but it is directed with such consummate skill toward the highest and most elusive musical objectives that it is often hard to distinguish between voice and technique, so artfully is manner blended with matter.

It may be that there was reason for Miss Tourel's sidestepping the German lied in her widely varied traversal of the song literature, but whatever the weaknesses or omissions of her equipment they were not to be discovered in the wholly fascinat- arresting bit of poetry in Paul added such an aria as "Al desio di chi t'adora" to "The Marriage of Figaro" for its first Vienna performance to suit the abilities of the interpreter of Susanna, one Adrianna Ferrarese del Bene, who must have been just such a singer as Miss Tourel, with an extraordinary range and the facility of a coloratura. Stunning in Debussy It is difficult to say just where Miss Tourel shone most brightly, but certainly she was not least impressive in the stunning projection of Debussy's "Re-cueillement," in Faure's "Trois Poemes d'un jour," in the gay menageries of Chabrier's "Les Cigales" and "Vilanelle des Petits Canard," or in the subsequent encores, Hahn's "Si mes vers avaient des ailes" or Poulenc's "Voyage a Paris." There were breadth and passion in RachmaninoiT's Cease Thy Singing, Maiden Fair" and Balakireff's "I Loved Him," and the songs of Nin. Granados, VillS-Lobos and Mignone were as vivid as they were musically notable. The humor which had been so charming earlier bubbled forth in full measure in Dougherty's "Sonatina," the saga of a piano-practicing junior, and in Leonard Bernstein's "I Hate Music" cycle, and there was an Bowles' "Once a Lady Was 'iris TstuoiocityV culver 1 1 UNITED ARIISTST" FOX RIIZ a.h a.a llOaawaf lit. auituial atva.
