Scores of farmers packed the Supervisorial chamber at the Courthouse this morning, awaiting an opportunity to tell the California State Railroad Commission why they believe canal water rates asked by the Kern County Land Company would be so exorbitant as to eliminate any chance of the farmers' making a profit on their crops. The hearing, in session since Tuesday, is presided over by Com mlssloners Carr and Stevenot.

The throng of water consumers from all sections of the county farming areas attended today's session in answer to. an appeal is sued by the Farmers Protective Association and the East Side Water Users' Association. The mass of technical evidence auomitted by- tne land company, which controls the canals, before an adjournment was taken in the rate hearing several months ago, will be contested largely by the oral testimony of the farmers under a plan of battle outlined by their at torneys and engineers, It became evident today. When the land company closed its case at the last hearing it laid before the commission a request that the rate be increased to $4.34 a second-foot. At the opening of the commission's investigation into the operation of the canal companies, the rate was 75 cents a second-foot.

Witnesses during today's session testified the land company, in asking for the $4.34 rate, "failed to take Into consideration the ability of our farmers to pay," Cotton Ginned in Kern Valued at $lfiOOtfOOO BAKERSFIELD, Nov. 5. Kern county to date has ginned 34,125 bales of fine cotton, valued at the low prices of this year at more than $1,000,000, exclusive of its byproducts, according to a summary made today by Agricultural Commissioner Burtch, who estimates that Kern county's 45,000 acres of cotton will yield 52,500 bales. The commissioner estimates that 65 per cent of the crop has been picked to date. Due to the exceptionally low prices that have prevailed for cotton this year, Burtch pointed out that many farmers are now casting about for a crop to supplant cotton in next season's plantings.

Commenting on this attitude, Burtch said that the obvious conclusion is that the cotton acreage here will be curtailed next year. Art Lost on Way to Exhibit ound tn 1 ime SIERRA MADRE, Nov. 5.
