That was in 1880. when Los Angeles had 11,000 inhabitants, no sidewalks and was still usins kero sene lamps as the latest modern lighting. So Otto Mueller (the father of Oscar Mueller) called upon his friend O. T.

Barker and suggested that they start a rival furniture store at reasonable prices. Mr. Barker and his charming Kentuc-klan wife had Just come here from Colorado Springs and they had a little money saved up. FIRST STORE FOUNDED That first Httle one-room store was on North Spring street and it was called Barker Mueller, and they had nice Jor the horses outside. Thfyr had two clerks who worked days and eve-i nings, so the i ranchers could drive in after I their day's work I and buy furni-sa ture.

And thev bought a wagon I hiring one whenj H. they needed iti BENNETT They had a nice air-tight heater to warm the store. And when, for- a while finances were very strained, Mrs. Barker used to cook lunches for all the men, to save their time and money going out to lunch. One of their very first customers Was Mrs.

V. O. Cochrane who loves to tell how she arrived during the celebration of the fiesta of the 100th nniversary of the founding of Los Angeles. She bought a stylish walnut bedroom suite for $225, with a marble-topped washstand. She is still sleeping in that bed at 1550 West Second street, and also proudly points to a walnut booK-case and a table purchased a months later.

Walnut was the acme of Yoguish glory in those days. BUSINESS MOVED By -and by, O. T. Barker bought cut Otto Mueller and went into partnership with W. S.

Allen, when they launched out by moving to "the center of things" In the Merced Abbott Building on Main treet. But by 1883 Mr. Allen was bought out in turn and the firm became O. T. Barker Sons, which made the two younger boys, Joe and Al, feel highly important.

Al was the W.A. of the firm later to become so Impressive a part of the city. By that time they could brag that they had furnished most of the fashionable homes in Los Angeles. There was much excitement when the first steel-frame building went up at Third and Spring, the Stim-on Building, still standing. O.

T. Barker had turned the business over to his sons and, recklessly ambitious youngsters that they were, they wanted to move Into the grand new building. But the rent was $1500 a month, whereas their rent on Main treet was $150 a month. C. H.

Keep tip with it." So with the blessing of the church they moved. But the town kept growing and soon the Van Nuys Building was the fashionable center. Ten years later thev had ft huge place at 740 South Broadway, were entering seven floats in the fiesta parades, doing a big mall-order business with Mexico and South America and having their catalogues printed in three languages. It was in 1926 that the glory of Barker Brothers, culminated in the gorgeous height-limit building at Seventh and Flower streets, which was a mere cowpath a few years before. Now they employ 1444 people, 432 of whom are worn-cn, and their store covers twenty-three acres of floor space.

Their electricity alone 13 sufficient to crve a whole city of 6000 people. It was while 'on Broadway that tha debatable matter came up ot establishing an exchange department in th basement. Second-hand lurnlture. tut, tut. Very infra dig.

But they finally risked it. with much misgiving. That department has proved so profitable that dealers come from all over the country to see how Barker Brothers wotk it. Coffee drinkers were more fortunate, however, prices being about 16 peV cent under last year's. Los Angeles paid 37.4 cents per pound, Chicago 33.5 cents and New York 31.2. Bananas, about which two New Yorkers wrote a theme song, sold in that city for29.1 cents per dozen and in Chicago for 34.4 cents. In Los Angeles they sold at 6.3 cents per pound so that there can be no comparison until the department deter mines how many bananas there are in a pound or how many pounds in a dozen.

MORTGAGE RECEIVERS' REPORT DUE Survey of Condition of Concern Headed by Fish Nears Completion Despite missing and inaccurate records4, the ork of determining the condition of the American Mortgage Company, thrown into receiv-reship after the grand-theft indictment of its Reads, Frank and Roy Fish, Is virtually completed and a report will be published in the near future, according to the announcement yesterday of the Federal receivers. The task of the receivers, Frank C. Mortimer and A. D. Macleod, was made difficult by incorrect, inadequate, incomplete and missing records, the statement declared, but through the installation of a new accounting system much of this harm has been undone.

Missing records have been restored in many cases, it was said, and other vanished accounts have been reconstructed from fragments of information obtained from various sources. Constructive suggestions will be made at the time of the report, the receivers said, but until then no estimate can be had of possible losses, due to the necessity of determining the legality of many transactions and investigating the relationship of the concern with its affiliated companies, American Realty Company, American Loan Society and Diversified Securities, Ltd. Meanwhile the receivers are urging bondholders to cling to their securities, depositing them either with a recently formed central committee of bondholders or with other committees organized previously to deal with specific pieces of property involved. The central committee consists of C. E.

With a fractured skull and other injuries, Mrs. Huna Jenkins, 41 years of age, Is In Los Angeles County Hospital, where surgeons despair of her recovery, and her husband. William M. Jenkins, 43, is hold by police for investigation of assault with intent to commit murder as the result of a family quarrel shortly after noon today in the home of the couple at 1708 Gladys avenue. In the hospital with Mrs.

Jenkins is her sister. Mm. Helen Lundgrcn, 35, a divorcee, who Buffered scalp wounds and bruises on the arms and body when she interfered in the fracas. After sending his four children to a theater, Jcnklai, police declare, accused his wife of "stepping out." When she denied the charge, according to the officers, ho attacked her with a hammer. Mrs.

Lundgrcn rushed to her rescue and li the struggle with Jenkins received several blows on the head. Mrs. McPherson Tells Plan for Son's Wedding On the eve of her departure for Seattle and Vancouver, where she will attend graduation ceremonies of her Bible school classes, Almee Semple McPherson, pastor of Ange-lus Temple, gave out the plans for the wedding of her son, Rolf McPherson, to Lorna Dee Smith of Alva, Okla.
