Seven years ago, soon after coming to Southern California from Park Ridge, Illinois, Charles A. Taube decided to try the "home and income" idea, and accordingly purchased a small place near Pasadena and proceeded to stock It with chickens. He Gtarted with a few Ancona hens, and while he still raises a large number of this popular strain, he has also added a few White Wyandottes and Rhode Island Reds.

At the present. time, he has about 250 Anconas, a few Wyandottes and about sixty Reds. Mr. Taube is assistant superintendent of the Pasadena Poultry and Rabbit show, and takes a great interest in poultry shows. His entries won a large number of awards at the recent show, and one of his most interesting exhibits was a crossbred Ancona-Wyandotte, a bird with which Mr.

Taube has been experimenting for several years. DAVIS. The twentieth annual Dairy Short Course, held here recently, was the most successful in the history of the event, according to Prof. G. D.

Turnbow, acting head of the dairy division of the College of Agriculture. The work included lectures and laboratory periods in classes covering dairy manufacture, market milk, butter, ice cream, cheese and bacteriology. More than a hundred students were enrolled. The annual meeting of the California Dairy Industries Association was held during the short course period, at which time the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, I. N.

Voorhies, Los Angeles; vice-president, William Dryer of Oakland; secretary-treasurer, C. A. Phillips of the dairy industry faculty at Davis. Capons Only cattle which are free from tuberculosis and other communicable diseases can be exhibited at fairs or live-stock shows in California this year, according to a statement issued by Dr. J. P. Iverson, chief, division of animal industry, California Department of Agriculture, in which he points out that one of the important features of the new bovine tuberculosis law is the pro vision which prevents diseased cattle from being taken to fairs. A satisfactory tuberculin test certificate must accompany each animal at the time of admission.

"Thirty years ago," said Dr. Iverson, "dairy cattle on the Island of Guernsey were free from tuberculosis. Following a period of popular exhibits, it was discovered that the animals had contracted tuberculosis through contact with diseased cattle in other parts of the country. Drastic laws were passed preventing recurrence of these conditions, and vigorous campaigns were carried on to free the herds from disease." Cattle breeders in California, it is stated, have had similar experiences, and the 1927 law was designed to make possible exhibits of animals without danger of having them contract disease.
