WEDNESDAY MORNING. TELEPHONE MADISON 2345 "DECEMBER 25.. 1935. PART I. M 15 CHRISTMAS AT THE CAFES Santa Claus will be a distributor of real joy for employees of Scha-ber's Cafeteria this Christmas. As a reward for their loyalty and laithful service, Schaber's are distributing to their torce of more than 200 employees the sum of $4000 In CUristmas bonuses. It is most interesting to note that many of the employees have been with the organization since Its Inception In the spring of 1928, and more than 80 per cent have been with Schaber's for more than a year. CLUB HOLDS PARTY The annual Christmas party of the Southwest Optomist Club was held yesterday at Casa de Rosas Inn, Hcover Boulevard and West Adams street. Luncheon, gifts for members and guests and a special floor show featured the occasion. Tony "Bussman, president of the club, presided. Charlie Caldwell and Tommy Francis were In charge of the entertainment. The cafe as usual serves a special Christmas dinner today starting at noon. A capacity patronage Is anticipated. SOUTHERN STYLE DINNER A Christmas dinner in real southern style featuring young fried chicken together with all the trimmings is to be served at Eaton's Chicken House on La Cienega Boulevard today from 5 p.m. on. Recently opened, the cafe has steadily Increased Us popularity until now owners boast of capacity patronage mcst every night In the week. Under the same management is Eaton's Steak House on Wilshire Boulevard where only the choicest eastern . meats are featured and served a la carte. YULE BALL HELD The holiday season got under way at the Palomar, Vermont avenue at Second street, last night with the annual Christmas Eve Ball. Continuing in the Yuletide spirit, the Christmas party will be held tonight. Special features are planned. Two new flocr shows will open tonight with the Hudson-Metzger dancing girls in Christmas numbers and Joe Vcnuti's orchestra featuring Yule season melodies. THRONG EXPECTED New Year's Eve reservations are coming in at Pirrone's Cafe with j Indications pointing to a capacity throng for this occasion where patrons enjoy dancing to the music of Johnny Llndhart and his "jam swing" orchestra. A new floor show has been opened this week, Including Helene Lewis, the Dee Sisters, Don Powell, Reuel Lynch, j Dorcthy Davis, SallyCoy and '""George Hall ENTERTAINMENT ELABORATE Biltmore Bowl patrons are being treated this week to one of the most elaborate entertainment programs ever offered at the popular dancing and dining retreat. Ross Wyse & Co. bring with them the act which gained for them reccgnltion as Orpheum headliners. Tom and Betty Wonder present "Youth Steps Out," which received such applause en their recent European tour. Marietta, dance marvel, was the glamorous star of the George White Scandals. Fred Scott renders a repertoire of songs. Wayne and Tcske are described as "distinctive dance delineators." PRICES UNCHANGED . Mike Lyman Is making preparations for a gay New Year's Eve celebration at this downtown grill. His regular patrons will be pleased to know that there will be no rise In prices. As an additional attraction Lyman Is providing many forms of diversified entertainment other than the regular performers who will entertain all night long. OPEN ALL NIGHT The announcement comes from Al Levy that his popular Tavern will remain open all night long on New Year's Eve, for the enjoyment of his guests. There will be no change In the prices for the gay celebration that will take place there. Entertainers are being provided for the added enjoyment of the patrons. SARDI'S PLANS MADE The traditional Sardi's Tom and Jerry bowl finds a new atmosphere of gayety this year on New Year's Eve. The Continental Cocktail Lounge, recently completed addition to Sardi's Restaurant, will be the scene of Joyous festivity on the eve of the new year. The managers announce that the restaurant and the bars will remain open all night. MUSIC TALENT ADDED Jackie Fields has added a pianist and a singer to augment the entertainment now presented at the Montmartre Cocktail Lounge and Restaurant, also known as the "Montmartre Club." With the Three Roberts Brothers" headlining with their songs and clever musical imitations, the Montmartre reports a steady flow of business from noon until closing time. Special luncheons, dinners and suppers are offered on the menu by Henri Dc Soto, whose cuisine is world famous. BLUES SINGER FEATURED Martha Raye. New York blues sinser, will make her Pacific Coast debut at ic Century Club January 8. Hr recent showings with Earl Carroll's "Sketch Book." the successful musical revue "Calling All Stars," three months co-starring with Jimmy Durante, as well as Individual headline appearances, stamp Miss Raye as a finished artist of the "blues and torch" type of singing. Reservations for the special New Year's Eve party are being taken now, according to Henri De Soto, who plans a special dinner party. SPECIAL ACTS READY Gala New Year's celebration with noise-makers, paper hats, special acts will feature the new Club Envoy, cn the Sunset "strip." Kay Tc!and, "the blende baroness of blues." has a new group of torch sowrs for this occasion, Anna-Marie Nord will do her best twirls and patter, the Melody Four will sing and play. Bob Lightner and his orchestra will provide hot rhythms for these who would dance. Julius Klein, club owner and eymbalom player, will probably play his unique Instrument. BERETS AS. FAVORS Christmas spirit will be observed at the Paris Inn Cafe with hundreds of favors made especially for the occasion distributed to the ruests. The favors are replicas ofj the berets designed by Bert Rovere-and worn by the singing waiters. Rovere has been rehearsing the waiters in Christmas carols which will be sung in the cafe and ever the air during the season. Miss Thora Matthalson ana the Modcrn-ets assisted by Pete Pontrelii and the orchestra also have new and novel arrangements. FILM FOLK ATTEND Among the film folk at Perlno's Wilshire Restaurant the other night were found DoloresDel Rio, Cedrio Gibbons, Ronald Colman, Madge Evans, Tom Gallery, Genevieve Tobin, the Edward . G. Robinsons, Katherlne (Gigi) Parris, Llna Bas-quette, Barbara Stanwick, Marian Martin and Nancy Sheridan. DINNER-DANCE PLANNED The famous Mission Inn at Riverside will be a gay and festive place during this holiday season. Of course, Christmas and New Year's dinners will be featured. There will be a dinner-dance New Year's Eve. Guest apartments are exceptionally well furnished, most comfortable, and occupy a variety of attractive locations. W.P.A. CUTS J0BM)U0TA City Loses 6721 Places Under Nation-Wide Slash ; 52,902 at Work Here Federal Works Progress Administration will be obliged In Los Angeles county to give jobs to 6721 less persons than the 79,000 it originally expected to put to work, It was learned at the headquarters yesterday. Its quota was reduced to 72,279 on orders from the State head quarters which originally had set a 79,000 quota of persons tr be taken off the dole and put on Jobs. The trimming was said to be am to the necessity of keeping the nation-wide quota down to 3,500,000 and so the local objective had to be reduced prbportionately. WPA. has 52.902 persons at work here and between now and next Wednesday work orders for 6500 per sons still on the dole are to be written. Of that number 1500 are to be women. Most of them will go on existing projects. Two hundred and eighty-eight projects are in operation, and 249 more ..have been approved .in ...Ibis. office and are awaiting approval by the State and national head quarters. Two hundred ana ntty- four other projects are being pre pared for local consideration. W.P.A. STAFF COST LIMITED TO $150,000,000 WASHINGTON. Dec. 24. (."Pi-Administration officials reported today they were trying to hold the administrative costs of giving work relief Jobs to 3,500,000 needy unem ploved to $150,000,000. They have earmarked $160,000,000 from the $4,000,000,000 fund for pay ing administrators, clerks, office hire and traveling expenses, but hope to clip at least $10,000,000 from this figure. CP) Representative Fish, Republican, of New York, said tonight he has called a meeting of about twenty prominent New York State Repub licans to organize Borah sentiment in the Empire State delegation to the Republican national convention, The New Yorker, himself active in the national party picture, told of his plans after a talk with Borah. DENIES REPORTS Fish emphatically denied reports that the Idahoan "ever gave assur ance to anyone that he will not enter the Illinois primaries." Illinois is the residence of Col. Frank Knox, Chicago publisher, and with Borah and others prominently mentioned for the Republican Presidential nomination. Borah, Fish said, may r.ot enter the primaries In New Hampshire, one-time home of the publisher. HOPES HE WILL ENTER "I certainly hope and expect he will go into the Illinois primaries," Fish added. Declining to name those he has invited to the New York meeting which he said will be about January 4 Fish would say only that they include a "former Republican candidate for Governor, former United States District Attorney and former United States Senator."
