Maybe, as in the opening of Neil Simon's movie comedy Goodbye Girl." a 33-year-old divorcee would let her 10- yearold daughter read her the goodbye letter that has been left by her departing lover. Considering the letter's contents. I doubt it. But speaking of contents, what the letter doesn't say is that said departed lover has rented the New York apartment to a fellow actor who is going to arrive any moment, expecting to find it vacant. Simon and director Herbert Ross very nicely avoided that sort of super-contrived plotting in their warm and witty collaboration.

"The Sunshine Boys." "The Goodbye Girl." alas, embraces contrivance as if it were the long lost son of "The Out of Towners." That's not to say that Marsha Mason. Simon's actress wife, and Richard Dreyfuss don't perform this material very well. They do. There is even a certain believability in their developing romance. But "The Goodbye Girl" is chiefly a script full of funny dialogue without being an especially funny movie.

Anyone wno has ever found himself trapped for more than two minutes with a self-absorbed actor will recognize the insufferable character played by Dreyfuss. He is perfect, which is to say one quickly wishes he would find a good steady job. perhaps in a road company of "The Fan- tasticks" touring Peru. Mason, as a unemployed Broadway chorus dancer, manages to be very likeable despite a haircut that makes her look like Robert De Niro (it's bizarre to recall those stories that "The Goodbye Girl" evolved from another movie Simon had intended to make. "Bogart Slept Here." until De Niro walked out in a beef with that project's director, Mike Nichols).

It is hard to know what to make of young Quinn Cummings as Mason's very precocious and chatty daughter. She very likely is a terrific actress but she has been given so much smarty Simon dialogue one conies away mostly impressed that she managed to get it all out. "The Goodbye Girl" (110 i is a Warner Brothers picture rated PG. 'Semi-tough is only semi-funny NEW YORK (UPI) "Semi-Tough." Dan Jenkins' comic novel about professional football, had wonderful characters but no story. So for their movie, director Michael Ritchie and screenwriter Walter Berns- tein set out to find something for them to do.

Now Billy Clyde Puckett (Bert Reynolds), playful bad- boy of a Miami team, and his philosophically minded buddy Shake Tiller (Kris Kristofferson), take turns falling in love with their gorgeous roommate', Barbara Jane Bookman (Jill Clayburgh) who is the daughter of their team's eccentric owner. Ritchie proved very adept at making fun of such ritualized American institutions as political campaigns and teen-age beauty contests "The Bad News Bears" represented a step toward commercialism. "Semi-Tough" sounded as if it might offer the best of both an audience- grabbing romance along with a cynically funny look at professional sports. Earlier this year the Paul Newman movie directed by George Roy Hill, "Slap Shot," did just that. "Slap Shot" was a tough movie.

Ritchie's is semi-tough at best. And semi- funny. A variety of secondary characters are thrown into the fray: an arrogant Russian teammate, a takeoff on Werner Erhart and EST (featuring Hurt Convy), a sadistic masseuse (allowing Reynolds a very funny scene with Lotte Lenya). But none of this is enough to distract one from the utter predictability of the main plot which guy gets the girl. Reynolds, Kristofferson and Clayburgh all perform to standard but somehow never quite connect.

The rating is strictly for rough language. "Semi-Tough" (108 minutes) is a United Artists picture rated R. A good title, but little else NEW YORK (UPI) Rainer Werner Fassbinder now is established as probably the most interestinR German filmmaker whose work (and there's a lot of it) can be seen in this country. So he would be perfectly justified in going to court tomorrow to halt the distribution of a grossly inferior early feature whose only asset is its provocative title, "Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?" Herr R.

is a rather seedy draftsman who endures his utterly commonplace middle- class life until, suddenly one evening, he snaps. Taking a heavy candlestick, he bashes his wife's girlfriend on the head, interrupting her nonstop chatter about a skiing holiday. He then bashes his wife and young son before hanging himself. Herr R. is played by Kurt Raab, an actor who went on to become a i in Fassbinder films.

The movie is almost devoid of action and the characters are so long-winded and boring, one wonders if the cast knew the camera was running. So much for the documentary quality of this exercise. a Fassbinder's third or fourth film, made in 1970 when he was 25 (actually he shares director and screenwriter credit with Michael Fengler). It has the very confined, flat, washed-out look of a movie made for late-night viewing on, say. channel 97.

"Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?" (88 minutes) is a New Yorker Films release, unrated. A tale worthy of Hilohcork NEW YORK (UPI)-For a tale of Hitchcockian suspense there is "Mr. Klein" starring Alain Delon and directed (in French) by the British-based American, Joseph Losey. Delon plays Klein, an elegant French Catholic antique dealer in Nazi-occupied Paris.

The rounding up of Jews for deportation is of no concern to him, except that he has been buying their family heirlooms at bargain prices. Suddenly lie finds himself mistaken by the authorities for another Robert Klein, a Jew being sought for deportation. Klein sets out to find the other man, compounding the confusion. Attempts to establish his non-Semitic heritage complicate matters ever further. "Mr.

Klein" is slow to evolve but it does so against a a i a meticulously detailed background, captured to Gerry Fisher's pbotog- raplty. This is Delon's picture all the way and he is superb. There is strong support, too, from Juliet Berto as his vulnerable mistress, Michel Lonsdale as his lawyer and Jeanne Moreau, seen all too briefly as a wealthy woman involved with the other Klein. Released in France a year ago, "Mr. Klein" won Cesars French Oscars lor best picture, best director and best art director.

"Mr. Klein" (122 minutes) is Quartet Films release (with English subtitles). Unrated. 'Nutcracker' time NEW YORK (UPI) December is "Nutcracker" month for the New York City Ballet, which continulcs its tradition of giving the full- length George Balanchinc work during the holiday season i a 38 performances Dec. Balanchine created his version of the traditional work to the famous Tchaikovsky music in 1954 and it has become an annual Christmastime favorite, i 10:30 p.m.
