PLAN OF STREETS The streets will be alternately narrow and wide with an occasional square where merchants dressed in the garb of the East, sitting cross-legged on their rugs, will sell their wares after the fashion of the Orient. At intervals during the day and night the actors in the pageantry and representatives of foreign countries in their native costumes, leading camels, burros and other beasts familiar east of Suez, will mingle with the visitors. The landscaping is planned to Include the palms, vivid flowers and vines found in the lands of North Africa. Under the direction of Mr.

Negro Drive Opens Today With an inspirational program of music, song and speaking, the campaign to raise $50,000 for a he-gro home for the aged will be opened In the Twenty-eighth-street branch of the Y.M.C.A. at 3 pri. today. Those backing the project point out the need for such a home because at present the denominational home in Watts, accommodating only ten persons, is the home in the State for aged negros.

At today's meeting a list of names of prominent white persons who indorse the home project will be read and Mary Cronen of the State Social Service Department is scheduled to speak. California's "Joan of Art" Still Sought Some unknown girl, perhaps shadowed in obscurity, Is being sought by the Southern California Music Trades Association to enact the role of "California's Joan of Art" going on an around-the-world trip to reveal to other nations the progress attained by Los Angeles as a music and art center. More than 100 girls have presented themselves at offices of the association. The girl will be chosen at the International Music Pageant and Exposition, June 18 to 30, Ambassador auditorium. Arrangements for paying expenses of the trip both for the girl and her chaperon have been completed, it was said.

Jogs will be eliminated and the grades revised. Several large building projects planned for Eighth street are scheduled to start upon completion of the widening proceedings, according to Henry w. Louis, president of the Eighth-street Improvement Association. The Eighth-street project is included in the major traffic street plan. The Council followed the recommendation of the Traffic Commission in allocating $328,928 from the major traffic bond issue as the city's share of the cost.
