"When it waa decided that I should make the trip Mr. Leonard of the Union Stockyards of Chicago asked me tf I wouldn't look into the stockyards situation and write a report to him what is being done on live-stock production and what more could be done to aid In this great development. GREAT BACK COUNTItY "When Leonard spoke to the Santa Fe, Union Pacific and other railroads about my trip, Mr.

Chambers, Mr. Fall and others asked if It would not be possible for me to include projects on their lines and make a little report; and I am here in the capacity of trying to get Information from central live-stock men as to how it Is going to influence the situation in our territory and what ia being done here. "Then I am going to make some suggestions with reference to the marketing of this live stock and also to suggest as to three ways they can help the farmers in their territory. "I am very deeply Interested In a phase of development that had not come to my attention In any direct way before I came out hero; and that Is that Los Angeles, a city on tha Coast, is located in a territory with a tremendous area known as a back country; taking the Colorado iliver and following It to ita source; taking the tributaries and following the tributaries from New Mexico up Into Utah and Nevada: aking a part of even Wyoming and Montana; taking In all that territory surrounded' by high mountains. "You find here a great area of land with the water flowing toward the) Gulf of California and we find, too, the trade flowing the same way and Los Angeles has a wonderful opportunity in connection with that growth of the back country.

Its necessary', as I see it, that this fereat city with population rapidly increasing. Industries bound to come here in large numbers in the future, it is necessary that you look to the country that Is going to supply the foodatuff and going to buy the products which are made. 4 IMPORTING BEEF ''It is true that live-stock production is undergoing radical readjustments. Stock men have been forced to buy land. They have been forced to give up the vaJley where the food was produced foi the stock.

These rangee have been fenced, entailing high price labor, taxes and charges upon the live-stock men of today, which waa not a fact years ago and ail of those must be taken Into consideration. But that doesn't mean that live-stock irodliction The building Will be of reinforced concrete or brick, plaster exterior, tile ro.n. steam heating and ventilating, oak pews with pine iJ 4- i h3 li-r, CTP PR trim. INYESTIENT EfflAICEIENT FINE RESIDENCES ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION ALB A-PIECE OF with restrictions so low as to be practically worthless. One subdlvider, who has a choice property In th Wilshire district, points with pride to the fact that residences costing less than J450O can be built in this tract.

For some reason best known to himself, hfc considers the tract well protected by restrictions. In a less beautifully developed section of the city, such a restriction would be quite adequate, and quite worth while, but In the section where he has chosen to operate, It is too low. OCT OF PIACE The man of modest means Is entitled to good surroundlhgs and a -ood environment for himself and his family and with all of beautiful Southern California to cbooR from, he shouW have no difficulty In finding them. With $4500 he can build an attractive home, but the 14600 home, no matter how prettily designed and landscaped, fails to make the proper impression when it is set down in the midst of a district given over to pretentions and costly residences.
